The first surprise on the opening day in Stockholm: Sweden lost to Switzerland 2:3

Finland needed OT to beat Germany (4:3)

Czechs beat Belarus 2:0; Slovakia beat France 6:2.

Holy Switzerland!!

8 points in their first 3 games:

Sweden 3:2 (and the WC is played in Sweden)
Canada 3:2 SO (and IMO Canada has a roster on par with the very good SC playoff teams - Stamkos, Staal brothers, Giroux, Simmonds, Eberle...)
Czech Republic 5:2 (and Czechs have 10 NHLers)

Swiss are now almost sure to win the Stockholm group (their remaining opponents are Denmark, Norway, Belarus, Slovenia)

That's unbelievable! :!: Russia hasn't lost a WC since, what, bronze in 2011, right? And they lose to France?

I pride myself on knowing hockey pretty well...I know who all the Russian players are to some degree and the whole thing...I've heard of like 4 or 5 of the French players tops...that's a stunner. I'd love to check out some extended highlights some where when they're available...I'd love to see how France did this or, probably more accurately, how Russia allowed this to happen...

Backup, AIUI. But I haven't seen France play in the tournament to be fair. I don't want to speak out of turn.

EDIT: Yes, Florian Hardy (who was the best player in the French League this year) is the starter, or at least started this game I should say.

EDIT2: Looks like three French goalies split time...I'll be over here if you need me...

The "small teams" (especially in the Helsinki group) continue to amaze - After losing to Latvia in regulation, Slovakia just lost to Austria 2:1 (SO). Slovaks now quite unlikely to make the QFs.

Meanwhile, Czechs quite undeservingly won 4:2 against Slovenia, mainly thanks to Pavelec.

Yes,thats was the 4th game already we could(should) won.. We couldnt score on this WC,also goalie Kristan wasnt good all WC and we will be out of Elite division again.
We should've beat Norway,Belorus and Danmark,we were better in all of those games, but they scored,we didnt and thats it.
Some players are out of form, especially brothers Rodman and Kristan. We would need tougher Defenders as well.
Right now,we lead 2:0 against Canada in last game, two goals from Urbas, also Gracnar good in goal soo far. He is really big talent, was spectacular in lost to Sweden,40 saves I think. He could be picked in NHL draft.

Alexander Ovechkin fills the last free Russian WC slot. He will join the team for their QF match - most likely against the USA. (Which makes today's US loss particularly costly - had they beat Slovakia, they'd be playing either Germany or France...)

All good teams usually hold 1-2 spots for the QF round. Sweden added Sedins+Edler, Czechs added Plekanec+Zidlicky, US added Galchenyuk and Oshie, Canada added Hamhuis, Finland added Granlund.

world championships website is horrible. Nearly impossible to tell whats going on. And...Ovechkin has already outscored his round 1 production...while still producing a similar outcome for the team. :pop:

What would you like to know? I think you probably saw him play, soo you have some insight in his capabilities..
Young promising goalie, maybe a little small, but very quick, agressive, smart, quick legs.. Best goalie prospect we had in last 10 years, after Kristan who wasnt good in this WC!

John Gibson, born 93' in Pittsburgh - is USA no.1 goalie in WC,what do you know about him?

It was just a general information query. I know he is friends with the Koptiars...I think Gašper is one of his best friends even. He's caught my attention a little bit recently, so I was just wondering if there is a lot of excitement about him in Slovenia. Can you provide a pronunciation for me? This symbol "č" exists in Czech and seems to indicate a "ch" sound it seems. So my best guess would be: Loo-ka Grotch-nar :?:

John Gibson is a really mature goaltender, very composed. He does not necessarily excel at any one thing, but he is very well-rounded. Does a good job in one-on-one situations, raises his game in big/clutch situations. It is a growing trend in American hockey to teach goalies to set up low, stretch your legs from post to post and take away the low part of the net but try to keep your glove up and Gibson plays that style. He's often flat on the ice, which can hurt you if you use it too often and are not a superior athlete. I would like to see him improve his lateral movement a little bit in terms of speed, but one thing that is good about Gibson is that he never overplays the puck when it goes wing to wing. Has a good glove hand and handles the puck pretty well with his stick.

I am told he's a quiet but like-able kid. Anaheim draft pick that will be groomed to take over after Jonas Hiller leaves...
