It's not even about not liking the NBA. Two things to consider about this:
a) it's not even about Mueller's love for the NBA. It's about talking about a sport with zero local presence during a time where the #2 sports team in this town is in the middle of a playoff run where they are either considered the conference favorite or even Cup favorite. People would be dropping dead in the streets if he pulled this act during the weekend of a Steelers' Wild Card game. At best, there is maybe 1 or 2 players in the NBA with somewhat of a connection in Pittsburgh: one dude in San Antonio (if he's still even there) and there's a second player in Charlotte or Toronto, if he's still in the league. Without listening to a second of Mueller since the playoffs - that's both NBA and NHL have started, I can tell you that he is not giving either of these players coverage.
b) the act of "look at me, I know nothing about the NHL so I'm gonna mock it" just looks bad, especially when your stations advertises "Pirates, Penguins, Steelers....on 93.7 The Fan Pittsburgh" multiple times an hour. As DudeMan said, even the people that don't know hockey like Josh Miller made an effort to at least learn about the game. Even Vinnie, who might be the second-worst person on the station to ask a question about the Penguins, has at least tried to follow the game.
