Liking the Pens chances to make it out of the East

Postby The Current One on Tue May 14, 2013 6:43 am

Looking at who is left, I like the Pens chances to make it out of the East. I would argue that the four teams that would give the Pens the most trouble are the Flyers, Leafs, Caps and Isles. I don't think the Sens are nearly as dangerous offensively as the Isles were, and the Pens have had success against both the Rangers and Bruins. Hopefully the Pens are able to make this a quick series, while the Bruins/Rangers goes six or seven in a tough, physical series.

Let's Go Pens!

Holding my breath until they're finally there. People said the seas in the east were going to part for the Pens in 2010 and it turned out to be crap and it's been the same crap since. The Pens HAVE to hit their stride again and be better, because it's only going to get harder.
I guess I feel a bit edgy today...

Don't wanna be that guy but all I'm thinking about is game 1 tonight.

Everyone has speculated what the playoffs will be like for the Pens. Everyone has been wrong including myself. Just gonna presume that the Pens will have to play out of their minds to just beat Ottawa.

We are better but blowing out a team one game and losing the next one in a nail biter is still 1 win and 1 loss. We can be out executed by teams with lesser-talent a little too often. We need great goal tending by one or both of these guys to bail us out if we are going to make it out. Zero chance this goes smoothly.

Be careful what you wish for. I remember Pens fans celebrating in '93 when the Islanders upset the Caps. I also remember when the Habs upset the Caps as well in 2010.

I celebrated when the Rangers beat the Caps last night too. Notice a trend?

I guess I am just not sold that speed is the pens ultimate nemesis as everyone else is. While we had some success against Boston and NYR they also had games where they easily bottled us up. The isles stayed in the series by stopping our breakout as much as being fast.

Not saying they shouldn't be the favorite to get out of the east or won't get out of the east just that playing the Rangers with a bad ass goalie, grind lines and some guys who who play heavy minutes and annoying styles against your stars doesn't thrill me.

So we barely squeek by the number eight seed and now we're speculating on winning eight more?

Not me. That Islander series was a sobering experience.

I'm on the "Pittsburgh Penguins 12-Step program". Our motto is "one day (game) at a time".

On focused on 1 thing, winning this series. That's all I want. I've been let down too many times to worry about anything else

I'm going to look as far ahead as I want because I don't play the games. I'm liking the prospect of going up to Columbus for a weekend game next season and sweeping them in the first round on the way to a second round rematch with the Isles.

I think there's something irritating about the "how dare you look ahead" attitude. I understand that there's reason to be skeptical about them winning 12 games in a row right now...but just because you've lost all confidence and want everyone else to know that...doesn't mean you can deride people for being confident.

Well, there are seven other teams and seven other fan bases out there with similar aspirations. I don't think it's ridiculous to acknowledge that fact.

I am so pumped up from that Bruins game last night. I was definitely not in playoff mode at all until last night. Though I did drink a pretty significant amount of beer on Saturday, that may count.

how could you even say that? The Pens had a 4-1 regualar season record vs the Isles so how can you say they were a team who gave us trouble? Or even the Caps, we smoked them 3-0 during the season. The leafs yes and Flyers gave us some fits but at this point if you can sit there and say that i dont know what to say other than you are completely wrong. Pens vs Bruins would be a dog fight and even though we spanked the Rags as you can see the King can completely win a series on his own. Oh yea and the fact that we have to beat Ottawa whos been playing very good hockey...

yea like others said, one game at a time. Im done predicting or taking any team for granted

The playoffs are meant to be a dog fight. Aside from when they rolled through the eastern conference in the 07-08 cup run, this current team has experienced some turmoil in every series aside from that Carolina one. You don't need to be head and shoulders above every single team in the league to win the championship.

Let this team show that it is stable in goal and can play team defense before we plan buying SCF tickets. If these two areas aren't shored up immediately then they are looking to get bounced from the playoffs as early as this round.

Not sure anyone is buying SCF tickets. If you look at the remaining teams in the east the Pens certainly have a great chance to make it. Why not?

I feel fairly certain they are the odds on favorite to make it out of the east. Having said that they are not exactly stable at goalie right now. Unless you think two great goalies are better than one.....

EDIT

Odds to Win 2013 Stanley Cup at 5Dimes as of May 14:

Chicago Blackhawks +240
Pittsburgh Penguins +265
San Jose Sharks +700
Boston Bruins +750
New York Rangers +800
Los Angeles Kings +800
Ottawa Senators +1300
Detroit Red Wings +1500
