The 2008 NHL Entry Draft

Postby ExPatriatePen on Wed May 15, 2013 1:52 pm

Looking at the 2008 Draft. Karlsson was the 15th Pick. Using only the success these players hve had in the last five years, how would you rank them today?

Myers sure has fallen off. He was looking to turn into a dominate force at both ends of the ice and I don't know what happened.

I'd argue LA would still take Doughty at number 2. Kick Bogosian out of there and Karlsson or Doughty goes to Atlanta Winnipeg.

Ranking them now?

Stamkos
Karlsson
Doughty
Pietrangelo
Myers/Schenn?

List is depressing after top 4.

Stamkos and Doughty are about spot on. Bogosian should drop a bit maybe, but I like him a lot. Its hard to be upset with Pieterangelo.

Redraft on career successes, yes?

1. Steven Stamkos
2. Erik Karlsson
3. Drew Doughty
4. Alex Pietrangelo
5. Jordan Eberle
6. Zach Bogosian
7. Derek Stepan
8. Travis Hamonic
9. John Carlson
10. Adam Henrique
11. Michael Del Zotto
12. Justin Schultz
13. Tyler Ennis
14. Tyler Myers
15. Luke Schenn

Next in lines that will probably re-image the list in a few years: Braden Holtby, Colin Wilson, Jake Gardiner, Jacob Markstrom, Jake Allen, Roman Josi, T.J. Brodie, Gustav Nyquist, Slava Voynov, Cam Atkinson.

Super sleepers (could really take off soon): Anders Lindback, Joacim Ericsson (UFA), Teemu Hartikainen, Matt Calvert, Andrei Loktionov, Harri Sateri, Jori Lehtera, Jared Spurgeon, Cody Hodgson, Josh Bailey.

I think you have Micheal Del Zotto too low mikey.

I don't even know where he was drafted, but i'd put him somewhere 10-20. Maybe 10-15. 20 seems a bit low.

The correct place to draft Justin Schultz would be nowhere. :pop:

I considered that and I don't vehemently disagree. The thing is, he's been very uneven defensively in his career. And at one point, down right abysmal. He's improving no doubt, he's a much different player than he was two years ago even. Part of it is expectation clouding my view, when he came into the OHL draft, he was supposed to be super-elite.

Where does he go? 9? 8?

I was thinking 8 was where I would have him. I would agree with your top 10 if he was 8th and everyone shifted down.

I wouldn't be against that. I value defense more than offense and the thing that helped to tip the scale: Hamonic and Carlson see their ice time go up in the playoffs, while Del Zotto has his go down. That means a lot to me, especially when you figure playoff games (on average) are usually longer than regular season games.

But there's a good case for what you say as well. A lot of pressure on Del Zotto to spark an anemic offense as he's by far the best puck mover on the back end for the Rangers.

Yea, he does arguably more than either Carlson or Harmonic. He is a key component where the others are quality pieces.

That's totally fair. I put Karlsson ahead because I put a premium on his 2012 season. Not only did he come away with a major award, but it was a historically noteworthy season. A geek like me gets all tight in the pants for things like that...
