But when they see a path to the finals that may go through the Rangers, Bruins and Penguins, and then say, “That’s do-able,” what universe are they living in?

Hahaha

Actually, it’s the soft Southeast Division universe, a kind of parallel world where you play pigeons all season, then meet birds of prey in May.

Upon finishing the article...omeone in Washington is finally mimicking what a lot of the rest of the nhl world has been saying about the Caps for a few years.

Unfortunately, that has been the Caps’ response to playoff losses since Biblical times, when they blew a two-game lead to the Pharisees.

Great writing there. I'm not familiar with the columnist, as I don't follow DC teams, but that was well put.

When you have a star who was made captain not because he deserved it but in the hopes that it would prod him to get in better shape, cut down his carousing and show some leadership, why be shocked when he scores fewer goals (one) in a first-round exit than Rangers fourth-liner Arron Asham?

Yikes.

It is the constant excuses that makes them look worse than anything...hot goalie, lucky bounces, the refs, Bettman.......every year they say the same thing.

Yes, he is spot on. But as a coach, you just shut up and worry about your side of things. Just imo.

Did someone just send you that portion of the quote? Because the entire point of the comment is that the Rangers are doing exactly that: "shutting up and worrying about their side of things".

Here is the full quote pre-"taken out of context spin".

“I like where our team is as far as how they handle themselves,” Tortorella said Wednesday afternoon at the Rangers’ Greenburgh practice facility. “We’ve got everybody and their brother whining up there in Washington about what happened in that series, and I think that’s a big reason why they lose that series. So I just think our mindset is very good, as far as not letting anything bothers us, just getting ready to play each day: Play the game, practice the next day and just go about our business.”

That was my impression as well. He didn't need to comment on it especially by explicitly referring to the Caps.

A wordsmith and dead on ~
The Caps’ funeral room is now an annual visit like a wake: a mix of sadness, what-might-have-been and the self-delusion that may be a requirement to play such a painful, disfiguring sport.

“They got a lucky one, and after that, everything seemed to go their way,” Oates said. “When you start leaking oil, it’s hard.”

In response to various queries, he said, “We did a pretty good job . . . We had our best start in five games . . . We’ll address that next year . . . Ask in a couple of days.”

Unfortunately, that has been the Caps’ response to playoff losses since Biblical times, when they blew a two-game lead to the Pharisees.

Ovechkin speaks:

Monday's early exit was the sixth career postseason defeat for Hart Memorial Trophy finalist Alex Ovechkin, who voiced his frustration to Slava Malamud of the Russian newspaper Sport-Express following the loss.

"I am not saying there was a phone call from (the league), but someone just wanted Game 7," he told the paper on Monday. "For the ratings. You know, the lockout, escrow, the league needs to make profit. I don't know whether the refs were predisposed against us or the league. But to not give obvious penalties (against the Capitals), while for us any little thing was immediately penalized."
