not unexpected. Torts is a good coach but with his style it's only a matter of time before players start to tune him out.

@DownGoesBrown 3m
The Avs should hire Tortorella as an assistant coach. Would be good to have someone who could be a calming influence on Roy.

he's had a serious lack of talent to work with for a while now, and his team came back down to earth this year. i wonder...if they didn't overachieve last year, and expectations would have been more realistic for this season, would he still have his job?

The Rangers' problems go far beyond the coach.

Might want to take a look at their GM next.

It became fire Torts or buyout Richards. Torts past overwhelming success for the Rangers cost him his job. He'll get a job somewhere, he's a real good coach. Hopefully its another team in the NYR division so we can get some better Larry Brooks interaction.

They've had a lack of talent, but at the same time he got very little out of his talented players and clashed so much with Gaborik that he accepted a trade to Columbus. Coaches with his personality have a shelf life and his was definitely up.

Glen Sather should have been fired first and quite a while ago. Sort of thinking this job lines up real well for Lindy Ruff.

I guess thats possible, but in pretty much any other system,even heavily defensive ones, I think Richards is still an elite player.

I don't know about that, they have an all-star goalie, one of the best in the NHL, Richards was still good, Gaborik is good and so is Nash (allegedly) and they had them at the same time, Callahan has turned out good, Staal is really good, so is Girardi. Rangers are an above average team that with the right coach and a couple moves to suit his style could challenge for a Cup right now.

He's an ass who has his team eventually tune them out. They somewhat look like the Lightning after they all ignored him and started to suck even though they till had, and have, talent.

Nash is a playoff no-show. He didn't get his playoff goal till round 2 of the playoffs, and thats "goal" not "first goal" . Staal wasn't there except for one game in which he was severely limited. He's a tough coach and will eventually get tuned out, but he performed extremely well in New York, and I don't even think he got tuned out. Sather is just covering his ass because he is actually aware of how inept he is.

The Rangers turnaround as a franchise started through building from within. They can never help themselves though, with a lot of signings and acquisitions of big name, high priced players past their primes. Drury, Gomez, Redden, Richards, Gaborik, Nash. They pretty much come to regret all of these. Paying a premium for a player's past accomplishments that they're never going to reach again is never a good idea.

they got eliminated in the 2nd round of the playoffs. that's as good as the team you described is supposed to do.

Torts made fun of the Penguins before so he'll definitely end up on NBC Sports Network. That seems to be the only requirement.
