There aren't many trade scenarios I'd be happy with letting Letang go. I think a deal could be signed and afforded @ $7m per. But if teams start calling, this is the asking price I'd be looking at:

Col: Johnson and the #1
Tampa: Hedman and the #3
Car: Faulk and the #5
Edm: Yakupov and Smid

If you can swing that from Colorado, Tampa or Edmonton you do it. Carolina really depends on how deep the forward class in the top 5; all I know of is Drouin and MacKinnon.

Yakupov and Smid would be a great coup, although mikey287 pointed out the importance of having a good PMD for the transition game. That does concern me.

It's tough either way, without a huge jump in the cap. You could have a #1 D (Letang) making $7,500,000 without a trade...or you could possibly have a top-4 D and a forward making $9,000,000 together (possibly with a good prospect thrown in too). Either way, with Malkin and Crosby, it'll be hard to fill out a roster...at least for the first year or two.

If you could get either that Col or Tampa deal, i'd happily do it. I'll throw in Niskanen for the Colorado deal. :pop:

If you trade Letang I think you have to get a elite prospect that is NHL ready. The propsed Trouba trade with Winnipeg would be the perfect example of what I would want in return of that deal. When he comes in the league we get a cap break while getting a D man ho is expected to be a great player. I think they projected him to be a Orpik type with a little more offensive upside. I want more in that deal so Ladd as suggested would be a great filler.

Just for kicks if Letang would agree to 5.8 a season for 8 years would you do it??

I think Ladd is the least likely player for them to move.

You have to get a cap break and a rookie that can step right in with no problem.

The essential piece is an established defenseman just entering, or early on in his second contract...i.e. Josi, Shattenkirk, etc... This keeps the cost down at least early on. Trading Letang for another top D about to cash in is absolutely pointless.

Problem is, what GM will trade that critical piece?

No way Letang takes 5.8 for 8 years, but if he said yes, I would take it and run.

I like Trouba and If I remember Ladd likes to get his nose dirty, and that's something we could use.

That thought came up in my mind also.

Pens can't take back a bunch of salary because the NHL has this thing called a salary cap. That's why Letang is likely getting moved. At 4.6 and a better PP QB than Letang, wouldn't be a bad deal but you need their #1 draft pick and then some. Stars' prospects also aren't anything overwhelming right now.

If I'm Shero I'm advocating this bidding war as hard as possible. Drive that price up somethin' fierce.

I am sure some teams have reached out to the Pens already. If Tanger wants 7+ a season I think Ray has to listen. You know Philly and the Rangers would love to get him. I think a team like San Jose or Colombus would be interested in him also.

There will be a bidding war and that is only a good thing.

That being said, if i can sign Letang for 6.5 Million or less, I do it. Anything above what Karlsson got... bbbbyyyyyyeeeee.
