Well, he did pick up Jarome Iginla, Brendan Morrow, Doug Murray, and Jussi Jokinen at the trade deadline for nothing they needed/wanted. Doesn't matter the outcome - it was a beast of a feat.

Not to mention picking up Vokoun and making lemonade out of lemons with the Staal situation.

I'd put those as the cake then the deadline deals as the cherries. Right you are.

And he locked up Sid and Neal to great deals.

I can't see why it would have even been close. He put a team together that should have won it all. He inherited the head case Franchise goalie so no blame there - AND he signed the guy who saved our bacon when he flaked out against the Isles.

The Staal trade was genius. Getting the 4 bodies for the playoff run with nothing subtracted from the roster was evil genius stuff.

I heard Elliot Friedman on the XM NHL channel today and he basically said that Shero showed more guts staying with Bylsma and then locking up Malkin than any other GM. His stance was firing Bylsma would have been easy and way to keep the rust off of Shero's rep. He lauded him for having Crosby and Malkin, who he referred to as two generational talents, locked up on their 3rd deal for $800K more than this past season's cap hit for them.

I only wish he could be a player coach who was as good at those roles as he is in his current gig. We'd go undefeated.

If he's smart enough to at least move Letang this off-season, he might be GM of the century.

Clearly this award was voted for before he signed Bylsma to an extension.
