The marking by Uruguay on Brazil's 2nd goal was awful. Neymar's dive late in the game was laughable. The guy hasn't even done anything yet and it's very easy to hate him.

I'm not a big fan of the U.S.'s roster for the Gold Cup. Being in the seeded pot for the WC is extremely important. I think winning the Gold Cup and drawing away and beating Mexico at home in WCQ's gives us a chance to be in the seeded pot. If Mexico is bringing their B squad as well then it makes more sense.

I think Mexico is bringing a B squad as well, since they had the Confed Cup and World Cup qualifiers. In any case, I don't think the US has any hope of getting seeded for the WC. I don't even know if FIFA uses their rankings to determine the seeds, but US is currently #28. They'll go up a bit next month based on their recent qualifier wins, but I don't see how they get anywhere near the top 8.

That said, I like the US roster well enough. They have some vets to look at to see if they can still be of use (e.g. Donovan, Onyewu, Holden), and some younger guys who have been on the fringes and might be ready to contribute more regularly (e.g. Gatt, Diskerud, Corona).

I'm not sure the FIFA understand their criteria for seeding themselves.

Yeah, I remember the US was (bizarrely) ranked #6 going into the 2006 WC, and not only didn't get seeded, but got put in the group of death.

Speaking of bizarre, how is Croatia 4th in the current FIFA ranking?

I would think that most Gold Cup teams who are also competing in the Hex are sending B teams.

Still, the team isn't that bad, has a good bit of experience and Donovan.

It's based on who gives the biggest bribes. Shameful that the US can't find the money to get a good seed.

It seems that Spain has brought their idiot caps to work today. (Or at least Jordi Alba has)

Give them credit, though. They're doing a great job stifling the Spanish passing game.

Holland's method of dealing with Spain, while cynical and brutal, is more entertaining.

Huh? They've had the better chances, and the only Spanish players who have looked dangerous are Iniesta and Navas.

Spain playing triangles in hypnotic fashion in their own end isn't fashionable, and hasn't been for a couple of years.

I still can't believe they were not up at the half. Both teams tired at the end of the 90 and are largely cooked, but Spain was on their heels throughout the first half.

I know, I know. I'm just not very good at praising the squadra azzurra.

That said, the 2nd half was a snoozefest.

Spain have worked Italy over during the extra time. Is Buffon officially the Italian Goalkeeper for Life, or is just assumed?

They seriously have a game for 3rd place? I'm sure the players enjoy the prospect.
