And the killing continues. What gives us the right to just go to another country and start bombing? I don't get it. Wonder what if China or Iran did that somewhere in Europe. But, oh yeah, we do it for umm, freedom, and umm, democracy, and umm, to fight 'terrorism' (though I don't see us bombing US cities as we do have some domestic terrorism as well).

PESHAWAR, Pakistan -- At least 17 people were killed in a U.S drone attack in the volatile North Waziristan tribal region in northwest Pakistan early Wednesday, officials said.

Local residents and security officials said the aircraft fired four missiles and struck a house at Sara-e-Darpakhel area of Miranshah, which is located near the Afghan border.

At least 91 women have been raped in Tahrir Square over the last four days, and that's likely a low number. Disgusting

Yeah - not only is the policy of "targeted" assassination (either by drones or night raids) questionable from a moral perspective, it's counter-productive as it creates more enemies than it kills, it provides a dubious legal precedent for labeling people as "enemies", and redefines the term "imminent threat".

Well, the vast majority of them view women as possessions. That is a cultural thing.

Not sure if your shock is serious. Egyptian men treat women like dirt, in large part. There have been countless reports from human rights and women's rights organizations.

Objectification of women is a significant aspect of the culture in that corner of the world. It's not culturally insensitive or racist to say that.

In a 2008 survey of 1,010 women by the Egyptian Center for Women's rights, 98% of foreign women and 83% of native women said they had been sexually harassed in Egypt. Women who wore conservative attire, an Islamic headscarf or niqab, were also targeted. Two-thirds of men say that they have harassed women.

Snowden rumors temporarily ground Bolivian president's plane in Europe
Whatever your stance on Snowden and/or whistleblowers in general, this has got to be a little disturbing. Countries refusing overfly rights to traversing heads of state simple because of speculation that an asylum seeker is on board? That's not only flouting international convention on the freedom of travel for diplomats and government officials, it's a pretty stout thumb in the nose to the long-accepted practice of granting asylum to enemies of the political class in other countries.

It's amazing how quickly governments are stripping citizens and other governments of personal and political freedoms.

Sharia law is brutal towards women. That said, the secular dictatorships we have supported/do support are also brutally repressive in other ways - especially economically.

Relative to the age of the cultures we are discussing, it is only in our modern history where we have thought of women and minorities as equals (and some in this country, I might add, still don't view them as equals). I would hold our our treatment of native americans as a fairly recent (again, relatively speaking) example of our own, uh, domestic blemishes. There has to be (a) a realization that not all cultures are on the same developmental timeline in terms of human rights, and (b) there has to be room for cultural progression/development and (c) the best way to achieve that progression is through trade and not military intervention.
