Pens Development Camp July 16-20 (Day 5 Scrimmage recap up)

Postby netwolf on Mon Jul 08, 2013 1:20 pm

As seen above via the Pens official Twitter account, Development Camp is next week, culminating with a scrimmage that is free and open to the public. Details here: http://penguins.nhl.com/club/news.htm?i ... t-penguins

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, I will be there each session. Follow me on Twitter @LGP_netwolf (or visit https://twitter.com/LGP_netwolf) and check back here. I may do daily write-ups as well.

Good stuff, Net. I was considering making the track down for the Scrim, but was hoping you'd be doing your daily reports.

Sorta excited about Oskar Sunqdvist. Great hockey name. Big, rangy, and fiesty as all-ghetto. He tore it up in Sweden last year. Might he be an outside shot for the 4th line? Probably needs to come over and play in the AHL for a while to adapt to the NA game.

I hope there is a fight to establish some much needed grit in this team although the majority of these guys won't see the NH for a few years. Even though he has played in the NHL, does Harry Z. still count as a prospect?

Also, what will the prospects do without the presence of the 25 year old eternal prospect Eric "Big Dog" Tangradi this summer?

They will all seem like slower skaters for one.

I think I'm gonna go to the scrimmage. Sounds like a cool thing to do. Plus, i haven't been to the CEC yet.

This is a waste of time. What will the players learn? Penguins prefer signing veterans. They do not trust, nor invest in development. The signing of Scuderi proves that. This team has no patience for youth and keeps getting older. The prospect pool is very shallow. The oft mentioned defensive prospects, have not panned out.

I don't remember if they have an official ban on fighting at this thing, but if not, I think it is highly discouraged. The point of this camp is to get all of them in front of Penguins coaches and management and to give the prospects a glimpse of what being a pro in this organization is about. Most of these kids aren't even going to see NHL time this year, though Dumoulin and Harrington probably have better odds than most.

Thanks for clarifying the fighting thing. Why is it being run by the AHL staff and NHL assistants? I thought DB would be involved somehow. I recall he was in past years IIRC?

Being invited to the Pens prospect camp is like being on the Star Trek Away Team.

I feel for a team that has traded away so many draft picks and prospects I would say our prospect pool is pretty darn strong.

Guessing HCDB will be there and probably will get on the ice at some point, but I seem to recall Bill Guerin and Tom Fitzgerald being pretty involved.

Coach, how bout Olli Maatta out there today....impressive huh?

Yes, Shelly.....Maatta did look tremendous. He has made monumental strides. We look forward to seeing how he does the next two years in London and then a couple years in Wilkes Barre after that.

Coach, when you said on the radio a few days ago that Bennett was probably going to be a third liner this year were you just trying to motivate him?

No.

This is a time for the coaches to see the new guys and see what they bring. They also can see how some players matured over the past year. They meet nutrition specialist and strenght coaches. They coachs also go over the players goals for the next season. The on the ice stuff is a way to gage a players progress and their strenghts and weaknessess/

The full roster has been posted. 4 goalies, 12 defensemen, and 21 forwards" http://penguins.nhl.com/club/news.htm?i ... L|PIT|home

The unknown name that jumps off the page at me is Jean-Sebastien Dea. 45 goals in the Q last year really jumps off that page. Had a late growth spurt up to 6', but still hasn't grown into it as he's listed at 155. He went undrafted, so I believe he's a UFA and can sign anywhere. Attended Montreal's camp last season. Here's a draft profile:
