Fleury not in Espn top 25 goalies

Postby sjnhiils on Mon Sep 16, 2013 8:07 pm

Not a big fan of Fleury but this seems a bit harsh. Vokoun also did not make it. So much for his trade value now.

I don't think any self respecting GM is looking to ESPN rankings when it comes to trade values/evaluation.

His career arc is certainly not taking an upward slope right now.

Seems about right to me. His save % in 2012-13 ranked him 24th in the NHL, 2011-12 he was 28th.

Edit: That said, I sincerely hope he has/will overcome whatever issues he's had and puts up a career year.

Does seem about right, I think he could get back into the top 10 if he can get his head on straight, but I can also seem him ending up being run out of town. I hope for the former and not the latter, but I would say it is 50/50 right now as to which way it will go.

Was just trying to point out the perception of Fleury that writers around the league have. If you like, we can assume that it improves his trade value

If you think GM's look at what some writer from ESPN says and uses that to gauge player value... I don't know what to say.

Never said they did. The poll was taken from many writers around the league , not just one. If many other writers feel this way, is it too much of a stretch to think that other g.m.s feel the same way? I'm sure they talk to the g.m.s and have a good feel as to how they view other players around the league. If you cant see the correlation, I don't know what to say

Maf isn't even listed as a possible choice for the prop bet what goalie will win the vezina this year at my sportsbook

My main takeaway came from Lebrun and Burnside's discussion on the rankings:

Sidney Crosby told us last week he believed Price was the best goalie in the NHL.

His trade value is irrelevant because he's never going to get traded.

Is there a "rest of the field" bet? If so and it is a longshot it might be a good bet as you never know Fleury "could" get really hot and win it. Would you have put money on Bobrovsky to win it this past year?

Better question, would Bobrovsky have even made the list? He didn't even take over the starting job until mid-February.

Known, but mostly ignored fact: Fleury's regular season numbers have been mediocre at best.

Meh, not surprising. Fleury has been a middling to lower-tier NHL goaltender since the Cup run in 2009, and mediocre before that.

What has he done to deserve to be in the top 25? His stats dont put him there, his playoff performance well that pretty much drops him passed people who don't kick the puck in their own net. Really annoys me to hear the company line, 40 win goalie.

Its not an insult, its the truth. I firmly believe we couldn't have traded him for a 7th at seasons end.

there's no need to trade him. goaltending didn't get us eliminated from the playoffs, so it has yet to be proven that we can't win with this tandem.

do i want fleury on this team? not really. but do i want to overpay for a guy like mike smith? no. is fleury better than whoever we'd promote internally? probably.

Shero's not one to give players away from nothing - and he was quoted as saying that there were a few teams inquiring about Fleury, even after the playoffs, but none had an offer anywhere near acceptable. This tells me that Fleury's value has gotten so low that he's worth more to the Penguins on the roster than trading him away.

I was discussing this with a friend last night. Is it a coicidence that Fleury showed a upward trend under Michel Therrien and has continually declined under Dan Bylsma?

That, or GMs know Fleury's talent and were trying to buy low and take advantage of a team that was going to make a reactionary move after a dismal playoff run.
