This. Unless they finish last and get a replacement in the draft, there is no way you can get rid of him now.

I'm not advocating getting rid of him, but I think his lousy disposition has spread around the team. Like you said, he was a ******* back then. But on a team of stars like Ward, Bettis, Polamalu, Farrior, Hampton, Smith, Porter, Harrison, etc he kind of blended into the background. As those players skills declined, they left, or they began to care less he was left as the the most talented and visible player.

They've had poor attitude players in the recent past - the old Plax, Santokeio, Anthony "Guaranteed to beat the undefeated Patriots" Smith. Even Ward had a very stealth way of being a pain at times. But I think their was more willingness to shut up and work hard than there is now.

Teams that lose usually have bad attitudes. Perhaps it's a chicken or the egg situation, but looking at the roster it seems more likely that they suck and that's what is affecting the team more than attitudes.

I think Mike Tomlin shares in some of the blame as far as the attitude pervading the team. I'm pretty sure the only two players I even like on the team anymore are Keisel and Polamalu, and they both have one foot out the door. Well, Heath Miller too, of course.

They hire a new offensive coordinator and he whines about it. He's the most visible and probably most talented member of the team. As QB he is the default leader. You can't have him questioning things in the media. That sets the tone. Woodley whining about playing time, Wallace whining about money, Brown whining about targets, Ben whining about what plays are called. Their goal isn't to win a Super Bowl, its to stroke their own egos.

like

I don't even disagree with this in the general sense, but there's a difference between criticizing him for being a jerk and saying he's not good or that his "style" hasn't been successful in "years." There were always rumors that he was very disliked when he took over the starting job and that he had only one or two friends on the team back in the Seattle Super Bowl era. His whining to the media or telling stories out of school (the imaginary broken toes that Cowher openly denied after the 2004 AFCCG) is no different now than it was then. So why did they win when he was an ass from 2004-2011, but all of sudden, his being an ass is the reason to get rid of him?

The difference is that the talent on the team isn't as good as it used to be. The RBs suck (at least at the moment). The O-line is a sieve. The WRs can't open and we're running a Cotchery-based offense. Haley can't call another WR screen on 3rd and 11 soon enough. Tomlin's empty cliche machine is already overloaded. The defense has one sack in two games. Simple as that.

I'm inclined to believe that there is some truth to pitsoccer's presumptions. It's not a determing factor in why I think they're better off looking for a new QB.

Good Lord. This franchise has turned into a disaster. And F the entitled veterans. You're old and you suck and you're part of the problem. I really do hate this group of Steelers players.

Yeah, those days are long gone, unfortunately. Dem Stillerz are no better than anyone else in that regard.

If they do wind up with 6-10 or worse, who is gone next year?

I am guessing Troy (8 million in savings with only 2mm in dead money) and Gradkowksi (1.2mm in savings vs. 500K in dead money), William Gay (1mm in savings). That clears 10mm or so. Ike maybe too? Both he and Troy are in the last year of their contract in 2014, and can't imagine either getting another deal unless they take steep cuts.

Troy and Ike will either get contract extensions or get cut. If they get an extension that would lower their cap # as well by spreading out the signing bonus over the length of the contract. BRoeth will likely get extended as well, which will break the hearts of people who think that dumping a franchise QB without a replacement on hand is somehow a good move for the future.

Ping-pong gate wouldn't be an issue if the team was 2-0. I'm not saying that the team doesn't have possible chemistry issues but not allowing younger players to goof off playing ping-pong might not be a bad thing.

Maybe they are spending too much time playing ping-pong? I don't know as I am not there. I have read tweets from Steelers reporters that they have not seen anyone using the ping-pong tables when they are there. If true, I really have no idea why the vets would make such a rule. Maybe it was a message to the younger players to spend more time worrying about the team than other pursuits. Anyway this is a ridiculous story and I've already spent way too much time discussing it.

I think the vets may have spent too much time living and their bodies are probably a little too worn down to be effective.

I don't have a problem with them banning Ping-Pong, pool, and whatever the hell else they feel like banning. I think its ridiculous and will solve nothing, but I don't see a problem with it. My problem is that when the veteran players tried to figure out what was wrong with this team the only thing they could come up with was "the young guys". The veteran members of this geriatric team sat in a room and decided to put all the team's woes on the young guys, which there aren't that many of. Its a finger point that absolves the veterans from any sort of penance for this crap start and creates a divided locker room.

If I was Tomlin, the first thing I would say in response to this idiotic idea would be "Really? This is all you ass clowns could come up with?" The second thing would be that if the games and activities are banned for one, they are banned for all. You live and die together as a team, as a single cohesive unit and all 53 players on the roster are directly responsible for the 0-2 start, not just the guys on their first contract, so you all get punished equally. And then I would strip the captains of their status and rotate captains until I witnessed a player display actions that shows he actually knows what it means to be a leader.

If we play the speculation game, who are the veterans trying to call out without calling out?

Heyward, Adams, DeCastro a start to the list? Cant blame Wheaton for this show because they dont give him any snaps.
