Larose looked like a good "anywhere in the lineup" guy for a few years. Forgot about him.

I think Larose is a lot more extreme of an example. He was better at his best and is now gone. Kennedy can still contribute.

The whole Glass and Adams thing is frustrating... those guys are worthless yet will play over Vitale, Jeffrey, probably Kobasew, Harry Z., Sill, etc.

Jeffrey's roster spot is safe - his versatility makes him less expendable than others - can play center or wing, PP or PK, point on the PP, can sub into the top 6 if somebody goes down, and generally plays a defensively responsible game (in his own end - needs to improve in the neutral zone and at the blue lines)

I agree 100%, save the IR placement of Vokoun.

We will probably end up seeing Despres and Bennett sent down on paper, leaving us $93K in cap space and then placing Vokoun on IR and recall Zatkoff to get maximum relief on October 1. This also keeps Engellend, Zolniercyk and Jeffrey on the roster and after that send some players down to get more daily cap space if this works how I think it does or at least one of them to get back down to 23 players.

Yeah, I would have to assume that Vokoun is actually placed on LTIR.

Seeing so much discussion over 3rd/4th liners value at this point is quite strange compared to the last 4 years. "Winger for Sid", "Top 4 dman", "Winger for Geno"... the usual discussions are more or less closed thanks to GMRS

Injuries will be the answer to the Cap woes. Be it Vokoun, or someone else, once you lose one of the higher salary guys due to injury, problems solved. Hockey is a physical game, and I cannot imagine a shot blocker/crasher type like Craig Adams, or (insert superstar here) not going down with injury, history repeats itself.

Yes, the Pens have to be under the cap, and not necessarily the best players will be there to start the season, but once the games start to count (10 games in let's say), the Pens roster will be settled.

Injuries won't necessarily be the answer. Shero has not used LTIR yet.

Yeah i think your right, the only change i would like to see is Nisky traded just to give us some cushion incase a trade somes along.

How does the Vokoun situation effect us? will he be on IR giving short term cap space or is it possible he is out all year with this?

There is no way you are going to have Nisky and Deprese as a 3rd pairing, Even if you have Bortuzzo as the 6th guy you would have Desprese sitting on the bench in the NHL. It would be much more benificial to have him play in Wilks Bare. While i don't doubt you fielded the best possible line up we need more defence minded guys on defence than offensivly gifted guys.

I think you carry Engelland as the 7th guy he won't hurt you if he is called upon and could be useful if we need him to send a message to another team and just a litte cheeper.

I thnk you got to move someone befor the season starts unless the Vokoun situation comes more enlightened in the next few days. ALso as the other poster suggested you need a 13th forward added.

It would actually be more beneficial to both Despres and the team for him to play with Bortuzzo on the 3rd pairing, but I mean, there's a better chance of Grizzly Adams having a beard than that happening.

last paragraph

According to what I read from Colligan, the more likely option would be to LTIR Vokoun before the season and land as close to $66 mil as possible. Especially since the injury is to a goalie. If the Pens wait until after the start of the season to use LTIR, the 23-man roster would have to include 3 goaltenders.... correct??? We all know that won't work.

Yeah i think that would be the best option as the 3rd pairing. Nisky should be moved, Shero should just land as high a round draft choice as he can.

Yes but if he doesn't pan out we have no franchise goalie.

We don't have one now.

5 teams need to become cap compliant today. The highest is only $2.1M over the cap (per Capgeek). Is it going to be as simply as LTIR or will moves need to be made by all 5, especially the Pens? Putting Vokoun on LTIR frankly gets then into Cap compliance without sending anyone down: -$2M + $540K for Zatkoff = -$1.46 M, $364K in the black. But that does not solve long term considerations.

If they waive someone right now, does that cap hit get removed right now, or only after he clears waivers tomorrow?

Waiving someone right now would not help as they would not clear in time for the 5 pm roster deadline today. No one is on waivers today as such.

All the teams that are over right now - or perceived to be over - have fairly easy fixes.

Complete side question...

When you waive someone is it actually 24 hours from when you notify the league or it is "24 hours" meaning something like "close of business tomorrow" type thing...?

The intention of waiving a player is typically done by noon Eastern time. Without going into strange scenarios and what if's...generally speaking, a player and the league is notified at noon Eastern of their being placed on waivers and then they will clear (or a notification of a successful claim is given) by noon Eastern the next day. Noon to noon is the ordinary course.
