Decker's first name is pronounced 'Jeff'. He was named in honor of his uncle, who died in military service. Decker's grandfather intended to name his son 'Jeff', but the hospital nurse recorded it as 'Jaff', and the spelling was passed on to his nephew.[8]

Somehow when Jones is claimed he becomes a Jose Bautista type player. Just you watch....

Review, the Pirates are among eight teams who have checked in on free agent shortstop Rafael Furcal.
Furcal's agent passed along the update. The 36-year-old missed the entire 2013 season following Tommy John surgery, but he could be an insurance policy for Jordy Mercer. The Mets are among the other teams who have reportedly expressed interest. In a weak market for shortstops, Furcal could end up with a guaranteed contract.

How would Furcal be an insurance policy if they got him? Unless the surgery left him with no arm strength, he's at worst a marginal downgrade defensively and infinitely better offensively.

Did you see his 2012 numbers? How is a .264 average with 5 HR's and 18 2B's in 477 appearances infinitely better than Mercer? Mercer had more HR's and more doubles than Furcal in 150 less AB's.

Furcal @ age 36 is trash, the Pirates having interest is scary.

I'd be fine with Furcal as depth. Plus if he were actually competent it would free up Mercer to be in a 2B platoon with Walker. I'm not terribly confident though in Furcal's ability to be good when he's 36 and coming off a major injury.

They should announce them before the sale starts. On the season ticket holder pre-sale they had times listed for each of the games but they don't have them listed on the normal schedule yet.

The problem is Hurdle would look at Mercer and Furcal as a legit competition like he did with Mercer and Barmes. I wouldn't bring back Barmes because of the Hurdle love affair with him, I would bring in a solely defensive replacement for later innings and let Mercer play everyday. That is unless you make a trade for an everyday SS at which point Mercer would be a utility guy to start at 2B against LHP.

In 78 AB's against LHP in 2013 Mercer was batting .410. Vs a LH starter, he was batting .398

Wouldn't mind furcal as depth to split time with mercer. But no thanks if we're signing him to be a starting shortstop.

Since the actual debate about the 2012 draft should be Meadows vs Dahl. He comes in #6 in the rockies system, I don't think there are many scout guys that would choose Dahl over Meadows right now.

But looking again at the 2012 draft. I'd rather have Russell or Wacha over any of the other guys (Meadows, Appel or Dahl)

They need an upgrade there. Mercer isnt going to maintain any semblance of offense.

I'm not completely sold on Mercer as an everyday SS. If his LHP numbers weren't a fluke last year he'd be very valuable as a platoon guy/pinch hitter at 2B. Walker can't hit lefties. Neither can Pedro. There isn't much that can be done about Pedro, but if you replace Walker against lefties with someone who is decent it's a sizeable upgrade.

The problem, of course, is finding an everyday SS. Peralta just signed for big money. Stephen Drew can't really hit.

I'm sure there is a wide gap with regards to what the Pirates are willing to pay and what the Cubs believe he's worth.

Pirates picked up a backup catcher from the yankees. A no hit all defense sort of guy (he was the second best pitch framer last season, although that just supports Rocco's theory of how the umps do the yankee games). I was sort of hoping for Sanchez to get more playing time at the ML level to be ready in 2015.

I guess the theory will become settled law when a heroin addict is in the top 10 in runs saved for the Yankees in 2017.

My guess is the Pirates want Sanchez catching every day. I'd rather have him on the roster this year.

Honestly, it's a good move. You want to have leverage on Sanchez going into spring training. You don't want him to assume he has that spot locked up. Always good to have competition.

Is Gary Sanchez a Heroin addict?

As for Tony Sanchez, the best case scenario for the team is for him to take over in 2015. That's best case in terms of getting a guy to start at catcher for the league minimum for atleast one season (maybe two, i'm not sure when guys that bounce back and forth are first eligible for arbitration. I guess it would depend on when he first comes up this season.

I'm not sure why you don't think Sanchez can be a starting catcher, I think his bat will play and the defense looked fine to me.
