Decker's first name is pronounced 'Jeff'. He was named in honor of his uncle, who died in military service. Decker's grandfather intended to name his son 'Jeff', but the hospital nurse recorded it as 'Jaff', and the spelling was passed on to his nephew.
Review, the Pirates are among eight teams who have checked in on free agent shortstop Rafael Furcal.
Furcal's agent passed along the update. The 36-year-old missed the entire 2013 season following Tommy John surgery, but he could be an insurance policy for Jordy Mercer. The Mets are among the other teams who have reportedly expressed interest. In a weak market for shortstops, Furcal could end up with a guaranteed contract.

The problem is Hurdle would look at Mercer and Furcal as a legit competition like he did with Mercer and Barmes. I wouldn't bring back Barmes because of the Hurdle love affair with him, I would bring in a solely defensive replacement for later innings and let Mercer play everyday. That is unless you make a trade for an everyday SS at which point Mercer would be a utility guy to start at 2B against LHP.
In 78 AB's against LHP in 2013 Mercer was batting .410. Vs a LH starter, he was batting .398

A no hit all defense sort of guy (he was the second best pitch framer last season, although that just supports Rocco's theory of how the umps do the yankee games). I was sort of hoping for Sanchez to get more playing time at the ML level to be ready in 2015.
