Lets say you could get him for a mid round pick. Unlikely, but lets say you could. Would you take Cousins as a bridge after Ben is done(and as a handcuff to injury) to whenever you find a replacement/as a potential replacement?

Everything the Steelers do on defense is predicated on their ability to stop the run. The most important run defender in Dick LeBeau's scheme is the nose tackle. Casey Hampton excelled in that role for years before Steve McLendon took over last season. McLendon had thrived in a pass-rushing role, but he struggled to sustain quality play as a full-time starter at the nose. McLendon made his average run tackle after a gain of 3.0 yards, the highest figure for any starting nose tackle on a 3-4 defense last season.

Come on down, Louis Nix. Irish Chocolate is what the team needs.

I would love that. Hampton was a stud, ate up two guys (hehe) and freed up the MLBs. I don't know if a 3-4 NT will ever make the HOF, but he should be in the discussion. It's so hard to quantify what he did - not many tackles or sacks. But the run defense was #1 for however many straight years largely due to the big snack.

Yeah a nose tackle is vital to stopping the run, but is possibly the most thankless job in sports.

So what's the cap situation? Do they cut Woodley before June 1, take the extra $1mil+ hit this year and be done with him? Or cut him after the 1st and take a $8 mil hit this year and a $9 mil hit next season?

Hopefully cut him before June 1 (if they don't do that it means he's staying imo)

Cutting him prior to June 1 would be a $13M cap hit when they don't have that kind of cap room. He's likely a post-June 1 cap hit.

Looks like the Steelers can get to about $5M under the cap by cutting Levi Brown, Ike and designating Woodley for a June 1 cut. That's before reworking BRoeth's deal. Also Miller has supposedly reworked his deal to lower his cap hit by 3 million.

Polamalu got a 3 year extension. Should lower his cap number but no terms have yet been released. Makes sense- he actually stayed healthy and played fairly well last year, plus they don't really have anyone to take his place if you assume Clark is gone and Thomas will take over for Clark.

including this year. so through 2016.

Pretty safe to assume he can be cut before then too.

I thought he would try and hit the market. My guess is he realized he wouldn't get an offer better than Paul Kruger (5 years, $40M) and the Steelers would match that deal.

I would be stunned if he's on the 2016 Steelers.

I see Polamalu retiring before the Steelers ever think about cutting him.
