Season 1 and book 1 are very similar. Since the book is obviously more detailed, it's almost like a bonus reading book 1 after watching season 1.
Since all the best stuff has happened on the show already, you're probably better off just watching the show. I started reading the books because I couldn't wait another year to find out what happens next.

Took me 4 or 5 attempts. A Feast for Crows has been a slog however; I am still about halfway through and skipping chapters at a time.
