Could the gambling ring hurt Pens arena deal?

Postby mnpensfan on Wed Feb 08, 2006 9:56 am

I know that the Isle of Capri wouldn't have anything to do with the running of the arena, but does anybody think Rendell could use the bad ink from this gambling ring as another excuse to not give the IoC the license. He could say he doesn't want any kind of link between a gambling organization and the funding of the arena.

Just me preparing myself for the move I guess :(

I don't think so. . .

I think Rendell is more worried his name may come up in this, than he is about using this to smear the penguins bid for an arena.

Search was everyone's friend on the old LGP board, too, but no one ever used it.

I thought the exact same thing this morning. I can see the response now.

"Mr. Rendell, why do you think the license should not be awarded to IOC?"
"Well, with the recent scandal concerning the NHL, I don't think we can chance having gambling near an NHL franchie. Since slots are comming, the only solution is to rid ourselves of the NHL."

If I'm not mistaken, All Isle of Capri is doing is building the arena. Once it is done and they have they license, there will be no linking of business to the Pens or the arena. They will be 2 completely separate entities, several blocks away from each other.

It's obvious to us and everybody else that the IoC wouldn't have any link to the actual function of the arena. But any kind of possible link, even the funding, could be ammo for Rendell to keep his agenda.

Understood, but public opinion is what matters here. And Rendell's plan is slowly crumbling before his eyes. The public appears to want a free arena. And, there is only one plan that includes that right now.

You can believe that Rendell is going to do everything in his power to keep his agenda. I am sure in the very near future another "lame duck" excuse will be inferenced in the media as to why the IOC plan will fail. We just need to keep the heat turned up high and not the issue at hand fade a way. The more media attention on the subject the better it will be.
