KDKA tv news on Tocchet story; trying to tie in Pen's

Postby td_ice on Thu Feb 09, 2006 7:18 pm

Andy Sheehan just ran a story on the KDKA tv news.

Calling it "Scandall fallout".

And the tease was. "Could this hurt the Penguins slots chances?"

I was incredulous to see where they intended to go with this and what the "tie in" was.

They mentioned the Tocchet scandal, showed him as a Pen. Then speculated on Recchi and LeClair.

Cut to attorney for Recchi and LeClair refuting the story of their involvement.

Then cut to Ken Sawyer with a statement contrasting the two, a legal state authorized parlor, with the scandal being illegal bookmaking.

Great job by KS as always. imo

Then Sheehan does his tie in, to how it may effect the Pen's.

Right after Sawyer's sound bite.

Sheehan "well that may be so. SOME people feel that gambling and professional sports should never mix. This only gives them fuel for their fire."

What a bunch of crap.

I am not even going to sit here and point out the vast differences.

I just wanted to make anyone aware of that, since it was near the top of the KDKA 6pm news broadcast. And in case the issue ever comes up and people attempt to use that as an argument against IOC.

Fuel to the fire?? Yeah, maybe for idiotic arguments.

I just don't see the correlation. Isle of Capri is looking to get a license for, run, and operate a slots parlor. The are not looking to run a full blown casino here or operate a sports book.

Also a little surprised to see them mention Recchi and LeClair after both threatened litigation against other media outlets yesterday...

Anyone who ties in illegal sports betting, athletes, and a slots parlor is a complete moron.

Give the news stations a break, they are coming off a good month where all their stories have been written for them by the Steelers. They are out of practice lately.

This is a serious story, but it amazes me on how media attention this has gotten. Everytime something bad happens in hockey it's all over the news for days. It makes me think that alot of media members actually love seeing hockey fall on it's face.

The coverage should not amaze you, Pete Rose still gets talked about regularly and that was a long time ago. Gambling on sports by people in sports will also get a lot of coverage because the biggest draw of sports is that the competition is fair and natural. Anything that could take away from that like the potential of fixed games is going to garner bigtime attention.

Also throw in the fact that one of the top 2 greatest players ever is involved and its a huge story.

My biggest media pet peeve is when they say "Some people ..."

I mean either they're lazy and can't even cite who they mean.

Or they mean "I" but you can't say "I" in the media so they replace "I" with "Some people..."
