WBS Game 6

Postby Kraftster on Tue Jun 10, 2008 10:22 pm

3-2 with 14:00 to go in the third as I write this (Chi just scored to go ahead), and, a couple thoughts:

Goligoski is definitely the best player on the ice for WBS. I've been impressed with his defensive zone work tonight too.

People need to stop thinking of Lannon as a legitimate prospect.

Caputi seems to be getting more ice time tonight, and, he looks solid.

I think one of the tough things for fringe guys like Ryan Stone is the fact that in the AHL he'll be a top six, and, he'll be playing the game that goes a long with that, but, in the NHL, he's clearly a fourth (or maybe third) line guy, a spot that will require a different style of game. That being said, there are certain aspects that he can bring to even top six minutes to develop his NHL game -- play sound defensively, be responsible with the puck, etc. He's not doing that tonight. Hot dogging a lot more than I'd expect. Somewhat disappointing. The same cannot be said for Nathan Smith who looks solid.

Lovejoy has been consistent positionally, and, the announcers even commented on how is play has gradually improved in the postseason.

In closing, I wish everyone could hear these guys talk about the sniper, PP QB, goal scoring machine that is Joel Kwiatkowski. At least you'd think so if you listened to these guys.

I don't really WANT to disagree with you, but Goligoski is a disaster in his own end. In fact, everywhere on the ice that he does NOT have the puck. I've watched him hit guys four times in the second period alone, get the wrong shoulder and let them spin right off to the net with the puck.

He is seriously overmatched physically.

Tim Brent has impressed me in every game I've seen in this series.

The talk about Kiwi is warranted. He's been John Slaney Part Deux in these playoffs.

That's the impression I have, as well. I wonder if during this long, long season for him he's dropped a lot of weight? The way guys push him off, and the way he bounces off after he hits somebody (or tries to) makes him look like he is barely 170.

Unfortunately, he's going to have a very short off-season to pump iron.

I suppose I can see what you're saying with respect to guys rolling off of him, I guess I was just surprised at how much he is using the body to begin with. Given his billing as "a poor man's Rafalski" I expected less physicality.

I must admit I had been flipping to the Bucos (Suckos tonight...) for some of the first two periods, so, peraps I missed some gaffs.

4-2

Season's over for them too.

I say give Goligoski more time. No sense in him coming up to sit in the press box.

Definitely agree. The Trashers are in serious trouble. At least they have Haydar to groom Little and Sterling to be AHL lifers.

Bryan Little is the real deal. The only hope the Thrashers have is he and Enstrom on the blueline. Other than that, they will need Colby and Crusher to save them, and while I love those guys, they are not for the job, and Kovalchuk won't stay there forever.

Good deal.

I do agree though. He'll never be anything more than a fill in. He seems to be one of those guys thats a first or second line guy in the minors, doesn't have the talent to play on lines 1 or 2 in the NHL, and is unable to adjust to being a 3rd/4th liner.

Gotcha. Yeah, Little is still only 19, right? Enstrom should be great for them, but, the cupboard is pretty bare. And to think Valabik was pegged as a slightly less talented Chara when he was drafted.

EDIT: Pavelec should be a legit #1 too.

And he was their captain I believe, but let's not forget that last year when he was with the Ducks, he wasn't even welcomed to practice with the Black Aces when playoffs came around. Maybe he COULD wind up as a Jeff Taffe kind of a guy at some point, but, just IMO, he is not the kind of guy who will wind up with the Pens playing consistently, but I could well be wrong.

They have remained an IHL team in the AHL. The old "I" was known to be more about older pros and less about developing young kids. I don't know who runs Atlanta's minor league operations in the AHL and ECHL, but it just seems that the Wolves just do their own thing.

They seem to have only a few young, fringe, NHL prospects and then a bunch of Minor Pro lifers like Haydar, or NHL has-beens like Martins. It's the same as it always was for them as the highest payroll team in the IHL.

They were a place to go when your NHL dream was all but over - where you could make $75K playing instead of $35K in the AHL. You had to have a dream to be willing to play in the AHL - and still have some affiliation with an NHL club.

He was the assistant captain, yes you're right. I could see him on the Pens 4th line, that's about it.
