He is, Loney. But this season was the last year of that deal. From the Pens site:

This is good news, I was afraid that he might be a victim of the Trade Deadline.

So that buys out his RFA years. they need a deal like this for talbot.

Agreed. Talbot needs to be locked up long term...Hopefully at least 3 years...He will be more expensive to sign then Kennedy I'm sure...

just because you resign somebody doesn't mean they can't be dealt at the trade deadline. colby was an example of this.

i really like kennedy though, and look forward to seeing how he progresses this year

Agreed, but I see Talbot waiting now that he has a shot on the 3rd line. More points = more $$$.

I don't think anyone needed the confirmation, but this is a clear sign that Kennedy is making the team.

Pens only have three potential RFAs of note this summer: Staal, Talbot, Goligoski.

Not sure what the $ was, but I imagine it can't be too much. Free-agent tracker for next year (based on the probable 23-man roster) now looks like this:

UFA: Satan, Sykora, Fedotenko, Taffe, Gill, Scuderi, Sydor, Sabourin

RFA: Staal, Talbot, Thomas, Goligoski

Good move, and I could not agree more about Talbot. He will get tons of money when he hits the open market, if the pens strike early he will be able to fit in long term. He is a key member of this team and deserves a long deal which would give him a big raise but not break the bank. If he hits the open market he will not be signable

I don't know about tons. He's yet to crack 15 G or get to 30 P. His numbers should be up this year, but he'll still be making 3rd line center money. No one is going to bring him in as a scoring line player and the money that comes with it.

I asked Max if he was talking about an extension when he was at my dealership the other day and said he was more then likely going to wait to the end of the season to do anything. Now if he tells a random salesman the truth about that or not is a different thing. I believe him tho.

Talbot is probably safe while the Pens have his rights, but I don't think he's a guy that will be here after UFA. He might only be a third liner, but teams will overpay for intangibles. They always do. But that should be several years away. I see him getting a multi-year deal in excess of $1 million per that'll take him to UFA.

as of now, talbot will probably get a dupuis-like deal when he's a UFA. if his numbers jump...well, that's different.

as for kennedy, i'm thrilled with this. he's going to be a draper-like presence for this team, hopefully for a long time.

Tons was meant relative to his role. Tons for talbot will be 3million and as ridiculous as that sounds there are ridiculous offers made every single year. I say sign him up now for 3-5 years at 1.2-1.5 mill. It is a huge raise on what he gets now and it will prevent him from getting an offer that the pens cannot match. I am biased because despite him being a lower line guy I still think his contribution to the team is measured outside of goals and assists. The wings waste no time when they see value, I think Max is worth the short term overpayment now to keep him longer term.

This gives me a chance to shamelessly promote an article I wrote saying we need to keep Max Talbot. Woohooo.

Really? You don't see him as one of the guys that wants to stay with this team? I also got the feeling that he loved playing here and what not. I just can't see him as one of the guys running for more money. But then again it's really up to shero in the end.

As far as Kennedy goes, this signing means we will be Stanley cup champions for at least the next two years. :D I joke but i really do like him. I saw him wed during our pre-season game. He was flying everywhere. Definitely one of the hardest working players out there. He was making tons of hits and forechecking like some sort of insane hockey ninja. Definitely a guy I'd like to see stick around.
