staal's rookie year production was fluky, but so was his lack of production last year.

too early to give up. he doesn't need to produce big points to prove himself this year, but he needs to look better overall.

I don't know about that. The guy has the talent. He did score 29 as a rookie. That wasn't a fluke.

Actually, it was. His shooting percentage was ungodly high. There is no way he will ever replicate that percentage again. Everything he shot went in. Last year and so far this year, nothing he shoots goes in.

great read MCM. don't worry about Staal. some idiot GM will offer him enough money after this season to give us 4 first round picks in compensation. i say move him to the 4th line until then.

ummm, nope. i believe players should be put on the lines that best demonstrate their skill level. and since we don't have a 5th line....

If Scuderi keeps leaving Gill all alone back there to defend, Gill may lead the league in goals.

The lower lines forechecked well, and that led to a goal by Zigomanis (please don’t call him Ziggy). Cooke worked the puck loose behind the net and found Ziggy all alone in front.

You Staal bashers are hilareous. HE IS 20 YEARS OLD!!!! Nobody can say right now that his 29 goals was a fluke. One thing is certain, he WILL get better and I think he will get a LOT better. You cannot teach size and its hard to teach defensive abilities like he has.

On the flip side, he has not looked very good, but then again neither has half of this team. I would gladly take a down year from him to get him at a better rate over the next 5 years. IMO he is lacking an edge to his game and doesnt look all that interested in working for his goals.

yeah. it's ok to say. it doesn't mean you're anti-staal or anything. but that was a fluky collection of goals.

he's still nowhere near the point where demotion should be considered though.

I think Staal is the one to prove that statement wrong. If he never sniffs 29 goals again over his career then your assertion would be valid but to say it was a fluke when the kid has played 3 seasons, actually 2 seasons and 4 games, before he turns legal drinking age (Note I said Legal) is a little premature dont you think???

I'd like to see a list of current nhl players Staal's age or younger that you think are better.

Lets not leave out of this debate that in the playoffs, Staal has played 25 games and scored 9 goals. Which is pretty close to his "fluky" average over a full season. This is when the games are tighter and mean the most.

In between all the garbage that has been strewn about this thread, this is one lone ounce of insight. Results were very different in both regular seasons. He played inspired hockey int he playoffs. He (and the rest of the big guns) have not played very well in this very young season. Let's see how the season plays out before we make any rash judgements.

"How about that shift in the first period when he got four shots!"

Weren't those shot chances set up by two of the guys who got F's?
