Doubt it. Kovalchuk would be 77 I guess. Since Malkin is 71

Here's another question: how do they pull the suggested trade off with so many injured d-men?

Either way or call up Richmond for now I'm guessing. That's if we give up any D-men

Wow, I'd make this trade, only if you can lock Kovalchuk up long-term. As good as I think Staal and Letang are going to be, the Penguins are deep defensively and I don't think that Staal will ever reach his full potential here in Pittsburgh. Satan's most likely a 1-year rent-a-player anyways. I'd hate for them to give up another first round pick though.
Plus you'd get back Colby Armstrong's chemistry.
I <3 trade rumors...

i would not want Letang or GoGo in that trade - they are cheap and will replace Gonchar after next season, if Staal is that much of a stud he and a 1st ronder should be able to get us Kovy (i watched the Thashers game lastnight and it was just awfull- they should trade Kovy and then move to a differnt city and just start over)

Well if this rumour is true and it is a "major deal", Kovalchuk would have to be involved. He is their only elite player.

If anything I wouldn't expect this deal to get done while they are on this trip.

People crying that we shouldn't give up gogo or letang for kovy is insane. Kovy would be the best guy in the league to play with crosby. All the guy does is shoot.

And carry the puck. Would take some serious work to get those two to work together.

He'll need a new nickname. That one has already been claimed here.

I like it except for the fact that Armstrong would be coming back. I know he was a fan favorite, but he wasn't that good. The reason he was traded was because he didn't have a place on the team.

I think this is interesting. I'm fine with the Pens sticking it out with Staal and letting him develop, but at the same time, we're probably looking at him being a third line center this season - albeit a good one - and then things really get fuzzy this summer because I don't think this team should match a potential crazy offer sheet that he could get from a team that has the money to spend and a lack of talent in the pipe line, should their be a suitable match. Kovalchuk is more attractive than Gaborik because he's proven he can stay in the lineup, proven he can put up elite numbers, and he's a relative bargain through next season. He'd be gone after next season, but that gives the team two prime playoff runs to win championships. I think that'd be a better compensation for Staal than the draft picks you'd get from an offer sheet.
The Pens don't need Armstrong so take him out of the deal - they have better versions in Dupuis and Kennedy. Ii wouldn't give up Satan either. You can fit Kovalchuk under the cap and Satan is a least worthwhile depth. I really don't like moving either Letang or Goligoski if you're already giving up Staal. Make it Staal plus a lower level prospect or two and I could probably endorse that.

Pens Get:Kovalchuk $5.5M
Armstrong $1.2M
----------$6,700,000
Thrashers Get:#1 Pick
Staal $2.2M
Letang $560K
Satan $3.5M
-------$6,260,000
Ilya makes 7.5 this year and next year. Would the pens just be responsible for his cap hit of 6.4 million?
