Pens Get:Kovalchuk $7.5M
Armstrong $1.2M
----------$8,700,000
Thrashers Get:#1 Pick
Staal $2.2M
Letang $560K
Satan $3.5M
-------$6,260,000
I don't like Letang in that deal AT ALL! Other people have said it, put Sydor in his place, add a pick and you got a deal.

Remove Letang, insert Sydor, and we have a really, really good 1st line.
Kovalchuk - Crosby - Dupuis
Fedo - Malkin - Sykora
Satan - Talbot - Kennedy
Godard - Ziggy - ?????
Not to mention the PP!
Geno - Sid - Sykora
Kovalchuk - Gonchar
THAT IS NASTY.

If it is actually proposed....Do it, no brainer.
You have to give up something to get something.
Don't worry about losing Latang, GoGo will be much better...be thankfull if they didn't demand him.

You really think GoGo will be better? I guess I can see it with him having less NHL experience then Tanger and he's playing so well already.

You guys are funny...Just take Letang out and put Mr. Negative trade value Sydor in instead...Waddell has made some poor decisions in the past. But we are talking about their franchise player now.
Kovalchuk is a real asset. He is signed through next year at a cap friendly number. He will go for a boatload...
Gotta pay to play people...

I think that there are a lot of other teams that could use Chuck that could outbid the Pens

I am VERY curious to see what Staal's trade value is around the league...I wonder if his pending free agency negatively impacts his value at all...

take satan out of that lineup (he's part of the rumor) and insert cooke on line 3. then put armstrong on line 4 and rotate goddard and nobody beats the biz.
then that's actaully really really solid top to bottom.
...still can't give away letang AND staal tho.

I don't think there is a rumor with players mentioned anywhere, just speculation...I don't see why Atlanta takes back Satan. He also has minimal trade value. The only way they take back Satan is to make the cap work. If Atlanta does that to help the pens cap situation, their would have to be a substantial sweetener to the deal...

even knowing that all this talk is "what if", I'm still amazed at number of people who think Atlanta would give up their only asset worth something (Kovalchuk).....

I think it's just a leftover from last year, referring to HOssa-to-PIT.

oops, i thought the OP was citing an actual rumor. my bad.
satan could work in the deal though...he'd be a name on a nameless team. atl fans (all 37 of them) would have SOMEONE that they know at least. it would be a decent consolation for a rebuilding franchise.
could just staal and a 1st rounder be enough to get kovy? maybe throw in one of gill/eaton/scuderi? atl could potentially lock staal up during his RFA year relatively cheaply (it's getting more likely that he won't get a big payday) and make a splash with one of the big UFAs with a more even attitude than kovy.

IFAIK, most one year contracts contain "no trade" clause...........

lottery pick to start their rebuilding all over.
can't see the thrashers gaining success this year. biggest shock, their goalie is suppose to be all world.
As we have seen in sports, some athletes play themselves out of an unhappy situation.

Then you don't get Kovalchuk.
Remember....the team that gets the best player, gets the best of the deal.

Though I'm extremely sour on Staal, he's definitely going to pull a lot in a trade market, especially with a team shipping a superstar. Espo may have been a first round pick, but Staal is a #2 overall pick with a big name and a finalist for the Calder is rookie season. I think he grossly over performed that year, but if a team is trading the face of its franchise, you need something more than just good prospects - you need the fans to believe they're getting a superstar (which they won't be).
Also, and without stating whether I agree with this deal, people need to realize a GM's goal is to win ONE stanley cup. Shero can't build this "dynasty" and keep waiting until the time is right because it will pass. We need to ensure a cup and set ourselves up for future ones. But if this team wins one cup, i'll be happy.

LA could get Kovalchuk easily and Atlanta wouldn't have to take back any salary dumps..
Frolov, Hickey, prospect for Kovalchuk would get it done I'm sure...
