will the Staal-Malkin-Sykora line stay together?

Postby Noise on Sun Nov 09, 2008 3:34 am

Staal looks like he may have got his groove back playing with them last night.

Talbot-Crosby-Satan
Staal-Malkin-Sykora (or Sykora-Staal-Malkin, what have you)
Cooke- Ziggy- Kennedy

problem though:

Fedotenko-Dupuis-Godard?

Though I guess Fedotenko-X-Dupuis could be the 3rd line and Crosby, Staal, Malkin, and Ziggo could take turns centering, then Godard gets a few shifts here and there as needed. Knowing MT that sounds about right.

I think Malkin and Staal were together tonight because Malkin got hit in the hand with a puck. I'd expect them to be seperated next game, but it's MT we're talking about, so...?

That might've been the reason but that line (and Staal) looked good. Also, there's no way they're separating Cooke, Ziggo and Kennedy and I don't see Staal on the 4th line.

The only reason they were together last night was that Malkin's hand was not ready for faceoffs.

Talbot-Crosby-Satan
Kennedy-Malkin-Sykora
Cooke-Staal-Dupuis
Fedotenko-Zigomanis-Godard

However, I may add, I loved that Cooke-Zigomanis-Kennedy line. So, if the game is close towards the last 10 minutes of a period. I can expect Therrien to do what he did last night, and roll only 3 lines:

Talbot-Crosby-Satan
Malkin-Staal-Sykora
Cooke-Zigomanis-Kennedy

Logically, the Cooke-Ziggy-TK line would stay together, but also logically the Gill-Scuderi pairing would have been axed after the first game they were put together in the playoffs last year and there would be no way in hell Sydor would be scratched for Eaton in last nights game.

Expect the unexpected.

Dickie - We're in agreement. Keep the Ziggy line together and for gawd's sake, split up Gill-Scuderi.

Did anyone know that Preying Mantis had the wheels that he does? And to think Shero got him for basically nothing. He's been looking better and better as the (young) season has gone on.

Who cares why the line was put together? It looked good, and thats usually the ether.riteria Therrien has for keeping a line together, if only for a little while.

I honestly keep asking myself "why did Phoenix let him go?"

They're the worst faceoff team in the league, so it's a bit odd that they'd give away the guy who's basically been the best so far. On the other hand, they're deep at center with some pretty young guys so maybe he just didn't fit into their plan. Keep in mind he spent significant time in the AHL last year. Aside from the faceoffs, he's a fringe guy.

After we picked him up one of the scouting reports that someone linked in a thread had "poor skating" listed as one of his flaws. I have yet to see that so far. The dude seems to get along just fine to me.

I'm sorry, but it bothers me a lot when peole write Crosby in on the second line. He's gonna have to play worse than Malkin for at least a few yars before anyone ever considers his line the second line.

EDIT: What the hell just happened? The post I responded to was deleted apparently, I'll leave this here anyway.

Why would that bother you? Seriously?

If the one playing better gets more ice time or is officially listed on the first line. Minus 7 games after the injury/illness in the playoffs Malkin has been better than Sid since January something.

No, why does there need to be two of them? First of all, how is 1b better than being 2? I don't see it. Secondly, if someone has such a fragile ego that they can't be on the second line, they wouldn't be capable of performing in the NHL. Any good team is gonna have their scoring lines playing equally anyway. Finally, as long as Crosby is here, he will be considered the guy, even if Malkin puts up 15 points more a year than he does. Its Crosby's team.

This team can be Crosby's team all it wants to be. The bottom line is, if Malkin out performs him, Malkin should be the #1 center (if you have to make it that you have to have a #1 and #2 lines).

So, if Crosby went into a Jordan Staal like slump, then he should still be the #1 center? I don't believe that. Your coach goes with the people that give you the best shot to win, not because of bruised egos.

If anything, as competitive as Crosby is, maybe having a guy like Malkin on the team (who I believe is the most talented person in the NHL) pushes him.

Malkin is going to be a beast in a few years. Imagine him with an extra 20-25 pounds on him.
