11 of 16 Pens games decided by one goal...

Postby FuturePens on Fri Nov 14, 2008 12:28 am

Especially the last 4 games have been extremely dramatic and so close...

1. barely escaped after almost blowing a 5 goal lead...
2. went down to a SO against probably the worst team in NHL...
3. epic 3 goal from behind OT victory
4. 6 round SO win after blowing a 3 goal lead

Exciting? ...Hell yeah...and win is a win...but I would not mind seeing 3 solid periods of hockey played for once either...which right now, except for the Blues performance, it's been hard to come by...

On the good note, ...good recovery by the PK...this could bail us out out of many games.

...anyway, lets go for Pens...5 straight...!!!

The thing tonight is that they barely let up. They controlled the first, the third, and OT. They controlled first seven or eight minutes of the second. They gave up four goals in that other small slice of the game.

Last year, they weren't on top of their game out of the gate and their record showed. This year isn't that much different, except they have one of the best records in the league. That shows me how far this team has come and how good it is. Just think when they hit their stride...

A big part of the problem tonight was that they didn't let up. They were too aggressive on the powerplay.

Malkin was always the last guy trying to save the D...because he was the closest on the blue line...which leads to tell me that Goligolski and Latang or whoever else was playing D...was pinching in too deep...just like you said Idiotfans...too aggressive! Bottom line: especially once you already got scored on once before like 5 min before also short handed =Mike Yeo is not a smart coach imo...the Pens should be doing better with this type of Nucleus

I don't really think that was a coaching problem, maybe a carryover from that Detroit game. They had to play like that in the 3rd and it worked perfectly for them. This game was hopefully a good lesson not to play like that till needed. And this lesson didn't cost them a win either, which is fortunate.

11 of 16 isn't that surprising when there have been 8 OT games, which by definition have to be one-goal games... Two years ago, there were 23 OT games after this point in the season, and only four before that, for 27 overall. Add 15 other 1-goal games, that's 42 out of 82. Last season had 15 OT games, with only 2 by this point in the season, and 19 other 1 goal games - for 34. In games 1-16, that's 2 OT games and 7 other one goal games, for 9 of 16.

In the end, all of that is useless - without calculating the record in those one goal games. This far last year, Pens were 3-4 in regulation one-goal games, and 1-1 in the OT (both SO). Two seasons ago, they were 2-2 in non-OT one goal games, and 2-2 in OT games (all OT, no SO). This season, they are 6-2 in OT games, and 1-2 in non-OT one goal games. So in those 11 one goal games, they are 7-2-1-1, compared to 4-4-1 last year and 4-2-0-2 two years ago. Which would you rather have? Of course you'd take the 7-2-1-1 in those 11 games.

Letang and the 3 forwards were all bunched up in the corner behind the net during the second short handed goal. It was looking to be a pretty decent scoring opportunity for the pens, but that wasnt realy how the cookie crumbled.

That's what separates good teams from the bad ones - the ability to win these close games. Good teams, even if they make mistakes, have the ability to battle back and find a way to win.
