Question about the Vancouver game

Postby stopper40 on Mon Nov 17, 2008 12:11 pm

Why is it an afternoon game?

I was wondering the same. Seems so random.

The Cryers and the Isles played a random 2:00pm game I think last thursday. Very random. I guess the circus was coming into town, and they sell more tickets then the Islanders game so they had to move the circus to a prime time slot fo 7-7:30.

That's a good question. But, since we're going to that game and traveling 2 hours to get there, it's a lot more convenient than an evening game. At least we'll get home at a decent hour. Can't wait, five rows off the ice at the end where the Pens shoot twice!!

It's even worse for Vancouver fans. Something about watching hockey at 11am is a little strange.

It is weird.

I thought it might be part of the CBC telecast which is showing three games that day. But looks like it will be on Sportnet Pacific (BC) in Canada.

Good, it might affect the teams sleeping pattern pretty nicely. Unstoppable force meets immovable object in this game, should be a good one.

Even more puzzling: The Canucks play in NY on Wed, go out to Minnesota on Thursday, and then back to Pittsburgh for Saturday afternoon. Nice planning by the league....
Why not stop in Minnesota on the way back to Vancouver?
Then they have a home game on Monday - so maybe the afternoon game lets them fly home after the game on Saturday instead of waiting until Sunday as the travel day?

This is why the NHL should realign to North and South Conferences with an Eastern, Central and Western divisions to make travel more fair:

NORTH:
West - Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Minnisota, Colorado
Central - Detroit, Chicago, Columbus, Pittsburgh, St. Louis
East - Montreal, Ottawa, Boston, Toronto, Buffalo

SOUTH:
West - LA, SJ, Anaheim, Phoenix, Dallas
Central - Nashville, Atlanta, TB, Florida, Carolina
East - NJ, NYR, NYI, Philly, Washington

No offense, but I do not like moving to a Midwest Division. I want to play the Flyers, Isles, Rangers and Devils. It might make sense for some teams, but not for us.

Also, all other problems aside, I miss the old baseball Eastern Division when the Bucs would play the Mets and Phillies regularly.

Plus, our rivals now are all within driving distance. Chicago and St. Louis are not.

Is the game gonna be on CBC? The Pens' schedule says the away TV channel is Sportsnet, which is odd because the game is on a Saturday and you would think CBC would really want to air that and make it a triple header of hockey that day with the Leafs game probably on at 7 pm and some hockey special at 5 and the CBC news at 6... Anyway, that's usually what they do on Hockey Day in Canada.

Regardless, I don't like the afternoon games at all either.
