I think the Pens just tired of Whitney's profile as a guy who would not take the body. Someone like Letang, who will do everything Whitney can with the puck (eventually) but will also knock your knickers off, is the right profile. Whitney was a little too soft, and yes, he is drastically overpaid right now. If he ever even gets back to being as good as he was two seasons ago, the Ducks will have a nice one.
The Ducks, as someone else pointed out, must be looking at moving Pronger or Niedermayer - or they may be looking at Niedermayer hanging them up after this season. He has flirted with stepping away now for 2 years.

Thats the chance you take when you make a trade.

Oh. And good luck Ryan, best of luck to you in Anaheim. You do have to feel bad for him in the sense that if the Ducks trade Pronger, than Anaheim fans might expect to have whitney be that kind of player. That could be rough for him but I think he'll do just fine.

Does this mean the Pens top 6 winger is Kunitz? Do the Penguins make another trade to get a top 6 winger?

Whitney would be slated as Neids replacement, not Pronger I'd think.
Hopefully Tangradi can be for us to Philly what Umberger was for them against us.

Meh, you people are overrating Kunitz vastly.
50-60 point guy who is 28 years old signed for 3 more after this year at $3.75 million cap hit.

Thank god Ryan Whitney is gone. No more soft play, giveaways or mental mistakes. Dude had no passion in his game, besides for the "backdoor play".

I don't like the trade in that he's probably selling Whitney at his lowest value. They get decent production from Kunitz and a guy who probably won't be ready to seriously contribute for 2-3 years, if he does. I'm not disappointed in moving Whitney, but I'm not doing cartwheels over the return either.

He is signed for 3 more years at $3.7MM cap hit...Losing Whitney's $4MM actually saves a couple of bucks...
To answer your question...I don't know

If Kunitz can put up 25-30 goals consistently I'll pay him that willingly. Thats an eminently reasonable cost in today's NHL.

I had a feeling we'd get Kunitz...not a huge fan...but let's see how it goes...I always feel weird about paying such a high price for a player that twice waived a couple years ago...

I don't know, but the Ducks have offense:
Selanne, Getzlaf, Ryan, used to have McDonald.
He was playing with scrubs unless he was buried on the 3rd line.

Where do you think he'll play for the pens?
He was playing mostly on the 2nd line with the Ducks, though I think he started the year on the 1st line. He plays bigger than his just his size, has a Cup, and brings some solid leadership along with his pretty good stats. I can see him with Malkin and Sykora right away. I think Fedo likely will stay with Crosby and who knows who will be on the other wing? Dupuis maybe.

Well he does have 13 ES goals, which is more then anyone on the team minus Sid, Geno (tied with Staal).

Kunitz is a decent player, and I really like what I am reading about Tangradi.
Good job Shero

I like the trade, especially to get a big hope like Tangradi
http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdis ... ?pid=96610We get a decent winger in Kunitz, but i really dont like 3.75mills per year.. Overpaid -but i hope he can be at least 25 goals per season scorer
Whitney was surplus on our defense and his play was the reason he was traded, otherwise it would be Goligoski who would be gone..
