Game 72 vs Blues - Thoughts from the Morning After

Postby Penspal on Sun Mar 17, 2019 7:29 am

Pens lose 5-1

- An afternoon game, vs a desperate team which followed a big win over an easy opponent. Toss in a hot goalie... perhaps we should have seen this one coming.
- Credit the Blues, they looked big, strong and skilled. When Sunny is scoring and making it look easy, you know you got problems.
- Its been a while since the Pens faced a keeper that stoned them as much as Binnington did. Gotta like a rookie who did his time in minors. Would not want to face the Blues come playoff time
- Or perhaps this was just the type of game where the Pens needed a Rust marker, or a Letang play that changed momentum. Not sure, but the Pens didn't have what they needed early on.
- At least Simon scored, he was long overdue and let's hope this gets him going gain. He had lost confidence and can now hand off the no goal curse to someone else.
- Philly will be dirty and desperate tonight. Pens will have no trouble getting up for the game this evening after yesterday's stumble
- Happy St. Patrick's Day BTW, hopefully the luck of the Irish will come to the Pens tonight.

No shame in losing to a desperate Blues team fighting to make the playoffs and riding an extremely hot goaltender in Binnington. Not the worst effort but not quite enough for a win.

Flyers will be in classic Flyer thug mode from start to finish tonight because they won't be playing for a win but rather to put a hurt on people. Their already minuscule playoff hopes went into the toilet Friday night when they saw a 5-2 lead over the Leafs in the 2nd period turn into a loss after Toronto woke up and blew them off the ice.

Pens need to keep their heads and sticks up all game and expect nasty. Just get out of there with a W and no injuries except some mild bruises.

Crowd sucked...nothing to do with the outcome but I did expect a better crowd with the “St Patty’s Day factor” and the Malkin tribute to kick it off. They were dead from the getgo but wins/losses aren’t determined in the stands....

Chalk this up to the typical afternoon game IMO....for whatever reason this team doesn’t play well in early games. It is what it is.

That was painful. They should be ready to go tonight after having 3 days rest to get ready for it.

Like you said Penspal, I credit the Blues a lot. They were more physical, won more board and puck battles early. Also agree on the hot goaltender... STL going 4/4 on PK was huge.

STL has multiple players that have been on and off their injured list the last 2 months like us. They got Perron back yesterday and Schenn back a week or two ago. Currently no Tarasenko. They will be competitive if they get healthy and make the playoffs IMO. They beat Nashville 3 times in a couple weeks about a month ago. Beat BOS during the Bruins recent point streak.

Anyway, if we win the next 2 games instead against Divisional opponents, I feel ok with this loss coming when it did to a good team out of conference.

Yeah but unfortunately Columbus got a point and the Canes won so they're only 2 points behind the Pens. A win is needed tonight.
