IT WAS a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. Winston Smith, his chin nuzzled into his breast in an effort to escape the vile wind, slipped quickly through the glass doors of Victory Mansions, though not quickly enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering along with him. He was on his way to clandestinely meet his beloved Julia.

On each landing, opposite the lift-shaft, the poster with the enormous face gazed from the wall. It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption beneath it ran.

Along with the Ministers of Truth, Love, and Plenty, as well as the excellent (if brutal) investigative skills of the Thought Police and diabolical O'Brien, the people of Oceania were suffering under the oppressive control of Big Brother.

Nonetheless, certain citizens in Oceania were slowly realizing that the time was now to rise up and begin a new era. An era where the nonsensical newspeak of WAR IS PEACE no longer appeared on their streets.

Winston returned home that evening secure that the Brotherhood would emerge victorious. As he settled into bed, he dreamt of what tomorrow would bring.

On the first evening, the Party acted swiftly, aware that the Brotherhood was a real threat to their power and control of Oceania. The first target was Shadnutt, who was suspected of engaging in inappropriate sexual congress with various [redacted by the Ministry of Truth]. The Thought Police barged into Shadnutt's poorly furnished apartment, forcibly removed him from his bed, and brought him to Room 101 for what would be Shadnutt's final moments on this Earth. As per the official Party records, Shadnutt (prole) had never existed.

The Party's other investigations did not turn up anything of note, and the hunt continued.
