Hope received $10M guaranteed and $5M per year

Post by Draftnik »

According to John Clayton. That would mean he received a $30M, 6 year deal.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay tooooooooooooooooo rich IMO for Hope.

Ridiculous, questionable ball skills, questionable tackling. Hello Ryan Clark.

Well, he can share that defensive backfield with Pac-Man.

Looks like the Titans still haven't figured it out. They signed Kevin Mawae (C) Jets, David Thornton (LB), and David Givins (WR). Won't expect much from them next year.

Completly ridiculous. This is why it can be so hard to keep championship teams together... the price for every part skyrockets, sometimes ridiculously so.

If you're going to pay a safety that much, he damn well had better be a game breaker... and I don't think hope fits that bill.

While you're absolutely right, it looks like the Steelers aren't getting hurt too much. The've retained their ENTIRE coaching staff, lost only Hope and Kimo through free agency, and haven't had to resign anyone to an outrageous contract. (In fact, Tuman seems to have taken less than market just to stay).

They've had one retirement of a key player (Ok, Admin, two if you count Tommy Gun :-) ) and even the player that retired (Bettis) wasn't going to help much in the coming year.

Clark talks about "one stop shopping" and "signing on-campus" because of his respect for the organization.

We haven't even had a draft yet!

Things are going good for the Steelers, this is payoff time for the Rooney's. It's not always expedient to run an ethical franchise that truly cares about it's players, but when you do, eventually it pays off.

Even though I'm extremely biased, I can't think of a Football franchise that is more deserving than the one owned by the Rooney family.

heh, that's whay I said "can be hard"... I'm not sure the Stillers are being hurt too badly, but you never know until they step out on the field.

We should be good if they are able to retain Deshea as the nickle/dime back. I'm fully confident in Bryant McFadden and Ike Taylor as my starting corners. I'm afraid that Ricardo Coclough is going to be a bust. Then again, it took Ike 3-4 years to acclimate himself to the big leagues so we should probably give him 1-2 more years until we completly write him off.

As far as Kimo, I think that Keisel will be an upgrade. Yea, we might suffer in run stuffing for a while but as far as getting to the QB, thats Keisel's forte. Him and Aaron Smith flanking Big Casey, I likey. Ryan Clark is going to be a better fit, I think, to play with Polamalu. He isn't as big of a hitter as Hope but he is better in coverage. He had just as many INTs as Hope in limited time, including the one that closed out the Eagles game at the end of the year for the Skins. My roomate is a Redskins fan and is pissed that they let him go for such a small deal.

Yowza. I like Hope, and he was a good fit back there, but I don't like him that much. He's good, but he's replaceable, and I don't think it's that steep a drop-off from Hope to Ryan Clark.

I guess when your as bad off as the Titans are, giving Hope all that money sounds like an excellent investment. Good luck to him anyway!!

I read something that pretty much every one who will be a starter this coming year is under contract for 2007 as well (except Deshea and Ike). Now is the time to strike for another Suber Bowl but in 3 years we will see some rebuilding when the linebackers and both lines need to be reloaded.

I think everything is going well for the Steelers right now, but I'm a little nervous about Taylor's status right now. I know they have retained his rights, but this kid is already good and has the potential to be that "shut down" corner we have always wanted. Someone (Redskins) may be willing to throw sick cash at him. He's young, and he's got a pretty nice resume already from last season.

Seeing the money that the Titans threw at Hope, who has nowehere near the upside that Taylor does, makes me nervous that a 1st round pick is nothing to a team with cap room and a need at corner.

How many corners are available this year or next in the draft that are projected 1st rounders, and how many of them run and cover like Ike has shown at the NFL level already?

Well we'll at least get a 1st round pick from the Skins.

A pick we'll need to use to draft a corner... Chances of that pick being as good as Ike? Well...

I guess it's still bettter than a sharp stick in the eye.

The chances of defending a SB title with Colclough and McFadden as starting corners = zero.

They should be locking up Ike long term, or at least make sure that Townsend is re-signed.

If they have to draft a corner, there is no way to be sure that he can help this year. McFadden was a real find last year, but I wouldn't want to have to duplicate that trick again.

But you are letting the crap we've had at CB for the longest time cloud your judgement on how good Taylor actually is. Draft picks are like gold in the NFL and aren't spent willy-nilly on guys like Ike Taylor.

You are assuming that all teams in the NFL are actually well managed. The skins and a few other teams have shown that they are clueless.

Taylor was the starting corner on the SB champs. Taylor is young and emerging, in effect a "sure thing" 1st rounder with plenty or career left. Taylor also could be had for much less than what Tennessee threw at Hope, and the Steelers still probably would not match.

So, I'm not worried about the good teams, I'm worried about the teams that are poorly run and desperate to get better.

Some thoughts on several of these topics...

1. I liked Chris Hope a lot. He was one of my favorite players on the team. He was looking for $4M a year and I even think that's steep for a safety. If he got $5M a year, plus the bonus, that's insanity. I'm not even sure that Ryan Clark is a step down, either. That Redskins defense has been pretty good the last couple of years.

2. Then again, I look at some of the money being passed out to some of these players and I have to wonder if the NFL should possibly ask some of these owners to submit to competency hearings. The Randle-El deal still mystifies. He caught one more touchdown pass last year than I did. He threw for as many TDs as he caught. He's never caught more than 47 passes in a season and has twice caught less than 40, including this past year when he had 35. Yet he essentially got Hines Ward money for catching half the passes and ten fewer touchdowns than Ward did. Unreal.

3. I don't THINK Ike Taylor will be going anywhere, but then again, I didn't think Randle-El would've been able to pull Hines Ward money either.

4. Arizona will invest almost $15 million this year - $11.5 million in bonuses and $3.25 million in salary - for its starting tailback. At the same time, the Steelers are preparing to defend of their Super Bowl title with a starting backfield of undrafted free agents.

5. There isn't an NFL franchise that gets more out of late-round picks and undrafted free agents than the Steelers.

Hope's total deal is $30M for 6 years with $10M of that guaranteed. It was in Clayton's ESPN Insider blog.

Wow. El and Hope will get us two pretty nice comp. picks next year. Good for them for getting paid like they did :-)

No one is going to forfeit a 1st rounder for Ike Taylor.
