Web Design...

Post by kovyman1127 »

Ok all,

I started taking courses in web design in hopes to "segway" my sales career into becoming a web developer for ecommerce.

Does anyone have any advice on:

1. What's the best job to "segway" into with my sales background (in Ecommerce)

2. What more courses should I take besides html, java, java script, C+, etc.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

In Pittsburgh? Rots-o-Ruck!

Seriously, you gotta relocate dude.

Augment what you've learned with a bit of .Net, Perl and Python and you should be able to get an entry level job. But like I said, prolly not in the 'Burgh.

I would advise you to not rely on everything you learn on your courses. Read some of the really promenant web design/development websites, such as A List Apart, and join some webmaster forums. What skills you will need depends on exactly what you want to be involved in. I think .NET is popular with the ecommerce big boys. For smaller stuff, then PHP (and MySQL) would be superb, and in my opinion, better. Maybe try focussing on an area of development, rather than spreading yourself too thinly. Don't do too many different languages, get good with something, javascript is very "de rigeur" at the moment, especially "AJAX" (google it).

Ruby is an excellent language, and the rails development environment makes it a very quick language to write programs in.

Not sure about what jobs you should be looking at, it all depends on your interests, and how much time you like to spend looking at code. Maybe stick to one area, either client-side (XHTML, CSS, javascript) or server-side (.NET, PHP, SQL, C#). Oh I don't know what you should do.
