If the state doesnt want to pay for any of it, what makes you think they are going to cut costs in other areas to make up for it?
It doesn't matter what pot you take it from.
Well the State absolutely doesn't want to have it appear they are paying for that - nobody is on the Pens side on that one, not even Pens fans - that's likely why this is the last holdup
But, lowering the up-front payment was already part of the negotiation - and if you look at what the city has paid for land, they have overpaid somewhat - I remember some parking lot they bought where the owners made a ton of profit after owning it for only a short period of time - so overpaing for that hospital land by a couple mil can be reasoned with what they paid for the other properties
In effect, the State helps pay for the IoC poison pill without doing so
If the IOC thing is the hold up why not negotiate with them for the naming rights? Just knock $500K a year off the price for a 20 year contract? Funny thing would be IOC would get more recognition than Barden's casino because they'd be mentioned on national TV very often.
I think Barden would block that. I mean, ouch, paying what MS is for the new arena then have it named after a competitor?
hey the jaggoff of the week (bozo the clown from the post) will be on junker and crowe to accept his award at 11. If anyone can listen and post some detals i would appreciate it. someone should call in now and say something and hopefully the clown will be listenin before he goes on.
In terms of Hill leaders wanting some input - good luck - that's up to Pens media relations and politicians giving press blurbs and meeting in town hall kind of things to make local leaders/residents feel like their voice is being heard - it's not like residents are going to get any parking residuals or anything - I don't see that as having an economic impact cuz residents won't be seeing any of the $ outside of possible new jobs through the development projects, etc. - to me that's more an issue of recognition of the residents and hearing them out
The Hill District involvement sounds like it's been resolved, at least in part...
I doubt IOC will go in on the naming rights. They do not have any financial stake in the area, and paying all of that money when only a few Pgh citizens will go to their casinos anyway is not worth it.
I'm sure it will be a local company that will get the naming rights. If anything, maybe Barden will buy into the naming rights to get his casino some advertisement. But I very, very much doubt the IOC will.
As I outlined in a post yesterday, if this $10 million payment to IoC is indeed the last hangup on these negotiations and all other things are as reported, it would border on the edge of insanity for the Pens to walk away from this Pittsburgh deal. From what we've heard, the deal they have here could allow them to realize significantly more revenues than the one in KC...a difference that could number in the hundreds of millions (from which profits would be taken). I just can't see them walking away from that kind of revenue over a $10 million one-time payment that could easily be paid in a few different ways (negotiate with IoC to spread the payment out over installments, have the state pay it and then the Pens pay the state back in interest-bearing installments, etc).

To quote Dr. Spock: "That seems the most logical outcome."
But that's not keeping the Pens from trying to milk a few extra mil somehwere, using that payment as why they need it even though, as you point out, they really don't

That was Mr. Spock! Dr. Spock was the baby doctor.
So Rob the Pens are staying...."Ya, I would be shocked if not"
That's ridiculous. I read TSN a lot cuz they're pretty much an authority on hockey, and TSN breaks more stories than anybody. No reason for them to be lying about this - now they may be going on a rumor here, but 9 times out of 10, I'd say they're right.

TSN is far from infallible. I'd much more believe the local media guys than TSN. They have no local sources, and national sources aren't going to be inside of this story.
No such thing as a Vulcan death grip. You are killing me, but at least distracting me from the arena stuff.
Well, what's that thing where Spock pinches the person's nerves in their neck and they pass out? That's what I'm referring too.
An old frat member used to walk around parities giving people a 'Spock Chop' but I know that isn't the proper terminology
And I saw an episode a couple weeks ago where Spock goes on an enemy Romulan craft, woos the female capt. then pretends to kill Kirk with a Vulcan death grip - which Dr. MCoy notes does not exist - Spock: "I know, but luckily the Romulans do not."

>>The Star Trek episode "The Enterprise Incident" makes reference to a Vulcan "death grip", which is supposedly a more powerful and lethal version of the nerve pinch. Spock pretends to use it on Captain Kirk in order to complete a mission. Dr. Leonard McCoy later asserts that the death grip is a myth, later confirmed by Kirk still being alive. Spock does, however, do something to Kirk that simulates death to such a degree that Romulan doctors certified him dead. Kirk stated that Spock used a nerve pinch to simulate his death, but what Spock exactly does is not explained.<<
