Verizon VoiceWing

Does anybody use Verizon's broadband phone service? What are the pros and cons? How is the cost compared to standard landline?

I just switched over last week. Other than the ability to add a TON of features, you'd never know the difference by voice quality alone.

They're coming tomorrow to install the TV and Internet portion.

I'll let you know. :-)

Do you use the same phone you already have? Does it affect DirecTV satellite?

Hmmmm... well let's identify which product exactly you're speaking of.

FiOS is Fiber Optic to the home. It's basically a replacement for Cable/Satellite/Internet and of course carries voice as well.

VoiceWing is Verizons VOIP or Voice Over IP. Competitors products would be Lingo or Vonage among others.

Voice Over IP is a great technology, the biggest reason most folks WOULDN'T do it is a "number portability" issue. In other words, "can I keep the same phone number I've had for xxx years?". With Vonage and Lingo the answer is most often "no" which is a "deal killer" for most people.

VoiceWing has an advantage this way because it's a Verizon Product. So they'll "port" your number for you.

Anyway, since it's voice over IP, it won't work well with Satellite (Due to propigation delay - in other words the amouont of time it takes a signal to get up to the 'Bird' and back down.) satelitte can typically transfer much more bandwidth than cable, but there's a longer delay between request and reply. (Imagine that when tyrying to talk on the phone... you'd say hello and the other persons reply could be delayed over a second. It doesn't sound like much, but try having a conversation woth someone where each of you agree to let a second laspe between responses)

I'm not sure, but Verison could be requiring Verizon Internet services (Which DON'T include satellite) as a way around this. You'd just have to have DSL or FiOS then in order to have Voice Wing.

And they sell a box which plugs into your internet connection (Router/Modem) which will allow you to keep the same phones.

Whew... ask EPP what time it is and he'll tell you how the watch was made :-)

Aren't you sorry you asked? :-)

I hope I wasn't inaccurate with any of my comments, I didn't realize we had an expert in the room :-)

Hey Daniel, you guys need any CCIE's there? :-)

No, we customers are not clowns. We are just treated like clowns by AT&T. We no longer use any SBC/AT&T services except cellular, and we are going to Verizon the very day our contract expires this summer. We have been treated very shabbily by AT&T Wireless, starting on day one when they charged us for services charges that were never told to us by the sales guy when all we did was upgrade our phones, not even change the service. The amount of dropped calls is incredible. Plus, the services offered by AT&T don't come close to what Verizon is doing. Nothing against you personally, but that is my experience with the company.

You are pretty accurate with what you say. I am sure you find a lot of stuff at DSL Reports. People are excited about the higher speeds, so they keep track with every little detail.

I don't know about CCIE hiring. 8)

I doubt we will ever buy out SBC or AT&T, but I tihnk their fiber plan has some serious flaws in it. For one thing, if copper slows down data, how can they expect to get 15mb speeds like Verizon? If we offer tv, internet and phone over one fiber line, what will SBC do the last mile with tv going over copper?

I live in an SBC area and can't wait for Verizon to come down my street.

I do have a tendency to take things personally .. & I'm sorry for the problems you had with at&t .. but be careful what you wish for ...
Verizon ain't all that's it's cracked up to be .... ordered 2 cells from Verizon
they were delivered to my address ..in someone elses name & with Minnesota #'s ... took me several hours to work it out ..they didnt want to take back the phones because I opened the box ???? but couldn't for some reason correct the account name & phone #'s ...

And not all customer's are clowns ..but Mike ..some of the stuff that comes out of some customers mouths ....
