Who brought back Brian Boehringer?

Post by Goalie »

Stop me if you have heard this one before but the Pirates bullpen has given up runs again in the late innings in a close game. Tonight Marte and Hernandez combined to give up the go ahead run in the 8th inning which made the score 3-2 Brewers.

The Pirates will send Burnitz, Randa and Castillo to the plate in the top of the 9th.

Supposedly, the bullpen was going to be a strength. Meanwhile, their best reliever (Gonzalez) can't get in a game because the bullpen is blowing games before it gets to him. It's not helping that the offense is struggling, yet again.

The best news so far is that Perez and Duke were solid after shaky springs. Victor Santos is crap- nibbles, lacks control, and is a human rain delay on the mound. Basically, he's Josh Fogg II (since we all missed him so much, right down to the ability to keep the other team in the game).

One on, one out, Castillo up to bat.

Speaking of clutch hitting Duffy popped out to SS with the bases loaded and two outs in the 9th.

As you said the only good part of the series is that Perez and Duke pitched well and that is what the Pirates are going to need if they are going to have any kind of success this year.

The Pirates lineup is better but that still does not mean they are going to score a lot more runs, especially when Bay has 1 hit in 8 AB's and has walked 4 times because the guys around him are not hitting enough.

"If he swings at the first pitch I'll..." I didn't get a chance to complete my thought because he swung at the first pitch, after Turnbow had just walked two guys. Ugh. Way to wait for your pitch, Duffy. That's what I get for grabbing you in the last round of my fantasy draft as a sleeper.

After an offseason of hearing about how Casey and Burnitz were acquired to be LH bookends around Bay, Tracy has Randa between Bay and Burnitz. This leads to Bay walking 3 times and Randa doing nothing.

On the plus, they're getting more runners on base. The bad part is they're hitting into double plays. This team isn't going to score runs unless Bay is crushing the ball.

Bullpen gives another one away tonight, this time Gonzalez gives up a run in the 8th inning and the Pirates lose 6-5.

Very odd play in the 8th as Duffy made a diving attempt with two outs, clearly trapped the ball but the play was ruled an out. The umps then get together and rule that he did not catch it, award the Reds runner on second home plate for the go ahead run and the runner on first was put on 3rd. Tracy got kicked out I think for arguing how the bases were awarded. The umps got it right in the end but I am not sure how they were able to award each runner two bases it might be a rule I am not aware of.

Then in the top of the 9th Duffy was hit on the foot by a pitch but not awarded first the struck out on the next pitch. Wilson struck out swinging and Casey grounded weakly to first for the final out.

Duffy has been terrible at the plate, Doumit finally got a hit (2 run HR in the 8th) and Grabow was bad again.

0-4.

Castillo is having a good start.

And hey, at least we have a nice stadium, right?

Winless Teams:

Kansas City
Philly
Pittsburgh

Just thought I'd point that out. Woo hoo ready for an awesome summer. I better buy extra innings to watch the Orioles.
