I love when opportunities present themselves like that, just to be absurd.

It's part of the marriage license form. You have to put down location and job of your mother and father. She was just going to put unknown for both, but the lady put up a big fit about needing to at least have a guess.

My friends wedding is Saturday. Should I just give him $100 or order something from this registry? Or some combination of both?
I'm not buying the $300 gravy boat. Neither of them cook. The only gravy they'll ever have will come from KFC.

im a big fan of multiple gift cards to restaurants/movies under the guise of "dates for the newlyweds for the future" or some crapola.pittsoccer33 wrote:My friends wedding is Saturday. Should I just give him $100 or order something from this registry? Or some combination of both?

as a person to be married one month from today, cash is the best gift you could ever get a bride and groom to be.

I'll second this as someone who got married in April. Not that we didn't want stuff off of our registry, but cash helped way more.count2infinity wrote:as a person to be married one month from today, cash is the best gift you could ever get a bride and groom to be.

How much did you expect to get from each guest? I'm just curious. Is there a gift amount that you would've said "that cheapskate?" Do you think there were guests that didnt give you any gift and you never noticed?

Re: Wedding Planning Thread
I don't expect any particular amount from any guest. For me personally, when I go to a wedding I give $75 if it's someone really really close to me, $50 kinda close and $40 if it's a 2nd cousin or something like that.pittsoccer33 wrote:How much did you expect to get from each guest? Re: Wedding Planning Thread
We expected $50 from friends and $100 from family. Cash is always a good choice because most stores will give you X number of days after the event to purchase items off your registry at a discounted price. So what was $50 to you will only cost them say $40.

Re: Wedding Planning Thread
yeah, most registries, if you don't get the gift you registered for you can go to the store and get it for 10% after the wedding

We registered at Bed, Bath, and Beyond, Macy's, and Target. I think BBB gave 90 days and the others gave 30, IIRC.

Re: Wedding Planning Thread
Same way pretty much. We had some very very very generous friends and family that I will forever be thankful for. The amount that we ended up with was quite a bit more than what I expected to be honest. We hand wrote every thank you card that we sent out and tailor made it to that person who gave us the gift/money no matter if it was 20$ or 200$.count2infinity wrote:I don't expect any particular amount from any guest. Re: Wedding Planning Thread
We didnt do handwritten thank you cards. I got tons of compliments on thank yous. Also, registry gifts IMO should be limited to the bridal shower. Cash only at the wedding. However if you do want a registry gift I would definitely ship it to their house. Don't bring it to the wedding. They have enough stuff to worry about taking home the next morning.

We got a mass produced thank you card from my fiancee's sister and it just felt cheap, lazy and unthankful.... but hey, to each his/her own.

Re: Wedding Planning Thread
The card itself that we sent out was store bought, but the inside of the card was blank. We didn't just write "Thanks for the gift" either. We probably took up a good portion of one side of the card for each one we wrote out. Sending out cards with thank you stamped in the inside and just signing our names seemed just not right.
I agree with mac though on the cash only at weddings or checks, we got a few of those for higher amounts. Now that I think back, I don't think anyone really brought anything other than cards that went in the gift box, all the gifts either came to the bridal shower, or we got a few gifts at home from people who couldn't make it to the wedding.

Oh yeah, and if you write a check, just write it out to the person you know, preferably JUST the GROOM's name. My bank didnt give us a hard time because they know us, but if you go to a bigger/commercial bank you will have trouble cashing a check written out to Mr. groom mac5155 and Mrs. bride Mac5155. Just make it out to the groom; his name will not change.

Re: Wedding Planning Thread
who cares? it's an obligation in the form of 3% customization (aka your name and gift) and 97% the same crap they write to everyone else. it's meaningless whether it's mass produced or hand written. i wouldn't care if every gift i ever gave for the rest of my life didn't receive a card in return. that's why they call it a "gift".count2infinity wrote:We got a mass produced thank you card from my fiancee's sister and it just felt cheap, lazy and unthankful.... but hey, to each his/her own.

Re: Wedding Planning Thread
Normally I would agree, but wedding thank you's were different for me. We only invited people we truly wanted to be there. Plus like I said even though I wasn't expecting alot, everyone was very generous above and beyond what was expected. That to me deserves a hand written thank you.shmenguin wrote:who cares? it's an obligation in the form of 3% customization (aka your name and gift) and 97% the same crap they write to everyone else. it's meaningless whether it's mass produced or hand written. i wouldn't care if every gift i ever gave for the rest of my life didn't receive a card in return. that's why they call it a "gift".count2infinity wrote:We got a mass produced thank you card from my fiancee's sister and it just felt cheap, lazy and unthankful.... but hey, to each his/her own.
