Re: Official 2014 Penn State Football Thread
I hope he stays, but if not I only begrudge him anything if he misrepresented the possibility of leaving to recruits, who then committed based upon him telling them that he'd be there. I'd like to think there's some succession plan in place which was explained to recruits.
Also, I think it would be odd for him to leave after recently firing a couple of assistants. If he thought there was a strong possibility he'd leave, why not leave them in place for the next guy to make a decision about?

An offensive lineman just committed last night (flipped from Temple), in the middle of all the turmoil. O'Brien might be using this to Penn State's advantage--since it's the recruiting dead period, he's not allowed to make first contact with any of his potential recruits. However, they're allowed to call him...think of all the potential recruits who have tried to contact O'Brien in the last 48 hours. Might be his way of gaming the system a little bit, especially with all the quotes from recruits so adamant about him staying.

You believe that. PSU AD is going to Tampa to recruit Schiano. So, if that is true, then O'Brien is a goner.DontToewsMeBro wrote:An offensive lineman just committed last night (flipped from Temple), in the middle of all the turmoil. I personally think that's a bit of a stretch. I could be wrong, but I really don't think he's playing any sort of games here, he's just exploring his options in the NFL.DontToewsMeBro wrote:An offensive lineman just committed last night (flipped from Temple), in the middle of all the turmoil. I'm not saying he has no plans on jumping--he's made his intentions clear, he wants to coach in the NFL at some point. Unless he's blatantly lying to his recruits and players, I think it's peculiar that the media is singing a completely different tune. He didn't have to tell them anything but 'adios' if the Texans have all but offered him the job. I don't really know what to make of it.

College coaches don't lie? Tell that to the Pitt fans/recruits and Todd "High Octane Punting" Graham.DontToewsMeBro wrote:I'm not saying he has no plans on jumping--he's made his intentions clear, he wants to coach in the NFL at some point. Here's the things. If I was him and the "worst" team in the NFL (who is not the worst team in the NFL) comes to me and says..."Hey, you want to coach? We are going to have the 1st pick...A decent defense, A good offense, and Arian Foster back next season..." I'd seriously consider it. Most coaches want to go to the NFL. Some come back (Saban), but some stay (Carroll). We'll see. Personally, I think he's gone and I really don't blame him.

I really don't think anyone is disagreeing with you here. Realistically speaking, he's likely gone. I'd love for him to stay, but you'd have to be a fool to think that he's not strongly, strongly considering heading to Houston.Kovy27 wrote:College coaches don't lie? Then they'll take Teddy Bridgewater and he'll suck.count2infinity wrote:I really don't think anyone is disagreeing with you here. Realistically speaking, he's likely gone. If O'Brien does leave, he will be no different than Todd Graham, Larry Brown and Nick Saban. There will never be another coach who stays 60+ years at one school.

Heard on the radio just now.. that if O'Brien does leave, that Schiano may want the PSU job... that would be a pretty big step back. Though I guess Schiano translates better to college than NFL.

That might be a good thing, having one guy not stay at one school for 60 years.viva la ben wrote:If O'Brien does leave, he will be no different than Todd Graham, Larry Brown and Nick Saban. There will never be another coach who stays 60+ years at one school.

Moving around is kind of Larry Browns thing.viva la ben wrote:If O'Brien does leave, he will be no different than Todd Graham, Larry Brown and Nick Saban. There will never be another coach who stays 60+ years at one school.

I'm referring to the whole telling the student athletes you're staying then leaving. Which is his right.

It's crazy that in my entire middle-aged life, I've only known 5 HCs for my two favorite football teams: Noll, Cowher, Tomlin, Paterno, and BOB. I like that stability for its uniqueness, but I know those days are over.Crankshaft wrote:That might be a good thing, having one guy not stay at one school for 60 years.viva la ben wrote:If O'Brien does leave, he will be no different than Todd Graham, Larry Brown and Nick Saban. Noll was replaced in 1992, thirty one years ago. What do you think is middle aged?Crankshaft wrote:Damn, how old are you if that's just your middle aged life. :pop:

Re: Official 2014 Penn State Football Thread
As much as I hate to say it BOB is gone....I just wish that they would make it official.
Now to start thinking about who would replace him at PSU?
My Top 3 are:
1) Greg Roman (49ers OC)
2) James Franklin (Vandy HC)
3) Al Golden (Miami HC)
I bet they'll gire Greg Schiano though, especially since he was fired today, and that will be a disaster. I just hope that this recruiting class stays intact.

I'm curious as to if they're going to go for some big name. And for that pay big money. They need to keep with this offensive power that they have started accumulating. An NFL OC would be great.
