We lucked out with my oldest with potty training. We sat her on the toilet at 21 months, she pooped, and from that day forward, she has gone on the potty. Even night time bathroom, we would put an overnight diaper on once she got out of diapers during the day time (around 2 year birthday), and she never had an accident. So we took those off around 2 1/2, and have been diaper free on her ever since.

I know that is extremely early and extremely lucky. And we didnt' do anything special, she just caught on quick.

I think we are going to have issues with my second kid though. She seems to have no interest.
1) I hate you
2) Yesterday, for the first time, our son told us he had to use the potty. Of course it happens while we are in the car and at least 10 minutes from a bathroom. We kept encouraging him to hold it and telling him what a great job he did telling us. About 2 minutes from the gas station I looked back and asked him if he still had to go. I chose my words poorly as I saw my son wrinkle his face a bit, turn a little red, and then say "No"

I've heard boys are much harder than girls with potty training and have heard of some boys taking until 4 or 5 until it's done. God I hope it's not that long. I have a feeling though that once he is completely potty trained we will be having our second.

I've gone out with both of kids at the same time, and alone with one of them like a million times since they were born. We also do runs together to get out of the house and away from mommy when she is trying to get stuff done or one a rampage. We also have fun trips together.

I've heard that too. I really did luck out. I don't think I'll be that lucky with the second. I can tell already.

But just be patient.

My wife has definitely does more of the solo trips with my daughter, but I've done stuff more times than I can remember. Less lately, though, since I started doing a lot of grocery shopping in the strip district on Saturday. That's a little bit too much of a madhouse to take her.

We started the potty training for my oldest right around 2.5 years (which is when she was interested in doing this). Bribery worked good for us, as every time she peed on the potty, she got a sticker or a lolly pop. Only took her a few days to get the pee part down, pooping was a little tougher. We got a bunch of stuff from the dollar section at Target and put it in a basket. Every time she pooped on the potty, she got to pick a prize out of the basket. By the time the prizes ran dry, she was fully trained. We worried that she would expect prizes every time she pooped, so we just gave her stickers instead, and that wore off quickly.

I think having my kid in daycare really, really helped with the potty training because she saw all the other kids going to the bathroom themselves, it made her want to do it.

Yesterday, my son followed me into the bathroom, took his pants off and pooped on his little potty for the first time. No provocation, no complaints...Just sat down and went. Now, I just have to figure out how to make that part of his routine. He's 2.5, so I figure if I can get him to go once a day or so on the potty, we're ahead of the curve. He's not the kind of kid that praise works for, and we weren't as prepared with candy/prizes. I like that method, however... it seems more likely to work on my daughter (1), who will want to try to use the potty so she can have something her brother doesn't!

Ever reply to a post and wonder if you know the person on the other side? Sounds like my brother in law...

By 1, my list looked like yours, but my kids are 15 months apart, so I never leave the house without one of them.

yeah, i imagine it'll change once i have 2. my wife will be nursing, which is a full time job for a little while. i'll need to run interference with my oldest.

though to my original point, we do everything together right now. there haven't been any times where i've avoided going out with my daughter. the opportunities just don't come up.

my kids (all under 7) can now just about tell me what style beer I'm drinking from the smell of the beverage. They also are getting very competitive on breaking each others time to get it from the fridge/cooler to me on the lawn chair.

I frequently have my daughter give me her thoughts on the aroma of the beer I'm drinking. She also imitates me by swirling her milk and smelling it before drinking.

I've also run into an issue with the youngest (2) letting him pick beers for mix and match 6 packs. Once he saw the tiger on the Great Lakes Rye of the Tiger bottle, the choices have been extraordinarily lop sided.

Went out with my daughters all the time. They are 13 and 10 now, so it's a lot easier.

I don't know why but I just assumed you were in that 24-27 age range mwb lol.

The little one and I do some daddy/daughter dates which usually consist of ice cream or the park. She digs riding in the jeep so it makes for a tantrum free event most of the time. I don't think id have the resolve for a grocery trip just the two of us. She hates the cart and needs to be stroller pushed or she turns into a beast from a Romero flick.

80% of TV for our little one is sesame street and wiggles. i have like 50 episodes of each DVR'd, and i just pick random ones to put on for her. the rest is the goodnight show on sprout, but since the berenstein bears are insufferable, i usually pop on a wiggles to replace it.
Man I can't stand The Wiggles. Creeps me out. I happen to like The Berenstein Bears. Their books were a staple in my home growing up. Since we're strictly on Netflix and DVDs now it's pretty much all Thomas all the time. He really like The Very Hungry Caterpillar movie though except the last vignette scares him to the point of screaming so I have to make sure I turn it off before then.

thomas is banned in the shmenguin house, but we've already discussed that whole deal.

the berenstein bears is pleasantly mellow, and, unlike thomas, i like the messages that kids are supposed to take away from it. but it's crazy boring.

Still don't understand the hate for Thomas. I can certainly see how my son uses the lessons from that show to help other people.

I'm just waiting for when we can watch "real" movies together. Very psyched for our first Star Wars viewing...
