Magazines to Subscribe to

Post by LeopardLetang »

I've always enjoyed a good magazine. Discover, Popular Science, National Geographic, many sports related ones.

Recently I've found great pleasure reading magazines at Barnes and Noble. I'm leaning heavily towards my degree and hobby of history and current events reading Foreign Policy, Foreign Affairs, News China, World Affairs. I'm trying them out here and there with an eye towards subscription.

What do LGP members subscribe to across the board if anything? Suggestions, reviews?

Sometimes it's nice to fold an old fashioned pile of inky paper to your nose rather than this phone eh?

I subscribe to Astronomy and Golf Digest. Truth be told, I'm pretty sure all of my current magazine subscriptions are from airline or hotel points where I didn't rack up enough, they were about to expire, and I just wanted to get something out of it.

I replaced magazine reading with with an RSS reader. (Including Reason)

The last magazines I read steadily were The Economist and Runners World.

Too many ads in print magazines, for me.

re:shyster: Hmm the lattest sounds interesting to me lol. Being that you don't write an uninteresting post I'd relish any kind of commentary on it from you.

Of the foreign affairs magazines I mentioned in the OP anyone privy to the perceived/real political slant to them. One hasn't revealed itself to me yet completely

The economist was my latest read. Seems over the last few months trying these out I tend to find a different one interesting each issue. Regarding Foreign Affairs, three issues ago it was packed with interesting content to me and I read every word, but the last two have been meh topic wise.

None currently, as I let my subscriptions to Harper's and The New Yorker lapse.

I had a free subscription to ACM Queue for about four years, before it went online only....a real page turner.

Back in 2003, I did a lifetime subscription to Rolling Stone for around $50. I'm not sure why they offered that back then, and it was well before the decline of print. But it's nice not getting renewal notices and it claims that my subscription doesn't expire until 2053...around my 80th birthday.

cigar aficionado, readers digest, pittsburgh magazine, southern living, allrecipes, Bon Appétit and complex (which I've got for the last 5 years and have no idea why-99% of the time it's complete garbage).

The wife used to subscribe to way too many through deals she would get from EBay bids.

Now that we only receive three via mail, our mailman started giving us a Christmas card.

And he'll still be touring with the Stones.

Speaking of music by old farts for old farts, I read Uncut.

I get Food & Wine, Lucky Peach, Saveur, Wine Spectator, GQ, Details, The Economist and Recoil. I'm about to get a periodical called Art Culinaire that's every bit as pretentious as it sounds.

Mrs Tif gets Self, Real Simple, In Style and Entertainment Weekly.

Fantasy and Science Fiction? It, uh, publishes fantasy and science fiction. I have an electronic subscription on my Kindle. It's 99 cents a month, publishes six times a year, and each issue usually includes one novella-length story and seven or eight shorter stories. It's been published since 1949 and has published a lot of famous authors over the years like L. Sprague de Camp, Ray Bradbury, Richard Matheson, and Isaac Asimov. It also has book and movie reviews. It's certainly worth the 12 bucks per year.

My firm has a subscription for that for our waiting area. Its name is an irrational pet peeve of mine. I thought the point of a beverage like wine is to drink it, not look at it, but I suppose "Wine Drinker" doesn't sound fancy enough.

I'll add that I subscribed to Reason on my Kindle for a while, but also having them on my RSS feed seemed redundant so I dumped the subscription.

I must admit that I'm several months behind on my Reason reading. I buy the magazine as a way to support them.

That was my thinking too, but for a stretch there they were on an "Obama is an evil socialist" tantrum and I stopped reading. I'm more interested in how libertarianism can benefit people that are suffering from government overreach than a pissing match at the national level. The RSS feed with its news nuggets is better for me. YMMV.
