(OK, a few exceptions just 'cause I had read the boox: The abysmal LotR movies and the OK Harry Potter movies.)

I went back and checked, and the last time I paid to see a movie was in 2006. I don't use Netflix or anything like that, so it's pretty safe to assume I haven't seen anything newer than that year. I view movies as lousy entertainment investments. For the overinflated price of a movie ticket, which might get me three hours of entertainment at most, I could pick up a video game on a Steam sale that I might play for dozens of hours, or buy a couple books to read for my Kindle.

I've only seen the 2nd Star Wars movie- Empire Strikes Back? and only X-Men 2.

He was one of Maverick's navigators after Goose bit the dust. Merlin, I think was his call sign.

He was the RIO for the pilot who turns in his wings at the beginning of the movie, then replaced Goose.

That movie sucks out loud. Can't abide it.

Spoiler:

- There is no 'trophy'; the school actively discourages that kind of competition because it inhibits learning.

- Maverick would have - at the very least - been put on permanent ground duty for buzzing the tower, and might have gotten himself DD'd out of the Navy altogether.

- Technically speaking, Maverick should have won the engagement with Jester because he chased Jester under the hard deck - the hard deck is meant to be interpreted as 'the ground', so if you fly under the hard deck that means (for the purposes of training) that you flew into the ground - it's not a get out of jail free card if you get yourself into a pickle mid-engagement. And chasing the bad guy into the ground is considered a kill in air combat. And it also means that when Viper is chewing out Maverick, Jester should have been there as well getting his own verbal beat down.

- The most recent graduates of the Power Projection class are not the only pilots in the Navy capable of dealing with a crisis on the other side of the Pacific; the carrier that was already on station probably had a few dozen aviators perfectly capable of handling things.

- Tactical aircraft get odd-numbered designations from NATO..... there would be no such thing as a 'MiG-28'

What the movie gets right:

- The emphasis on maintaining visual contact during an engagement is excellent.

- The "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" scene is actually a recreation of how Randy "Duke" Cunningham (the first all-missile ace in history) met his wife. To bad about all that corruption and bribery stuff after he became a Congressman, he was a legit hero of mine as a kid; on my desk I have a 1:72 diecast of 'Showtime 100', the jet he was flying on May 10, 1072 when he bagged three kills to take him to five total and become an ace.

Nah, I agree with you. It is more surprising than either of those two I mentioned, definitely more so than Fight Club. Fight Club could not be for everyone. Good Will Hunting is just a downright great movie, with some excellent writing and acting.

Similar story with Mrs Tif and me and the 'Mahna Mahna' bit from The Muppet Show. Mrs Tif had never seen it, so I YouTubed it. And as I'm sure you can understand, one thing lead to another, and the video was playing on a loop for..... awhile. Difference is, were both in our late 30s.

Can't help it. It's like the only movie that I can't suspend any amount of disbelief. It even bothers me that they break it up into two words. The school is called TOPGUN, damnit.
