I'm no baseball expert but I have to think all those guys chasing high fastballs was a result of good pitching as opposed to world class lousy hitting, Perez included. Or maybe KC just couldn't keep their s*** together.Kraftster wrote:Should have been able to score, yes, but he blew it slowing up at 1st and wobbling from 2nd to 3rd. Never would have made it home.
Bumgarner was actually looking sapped there after a pitch in the Perez AB, but Perez did not put together a good at bat.

Would have liked a pinch hit suicide squeeze more than Perez hitting there. Would have at least died by the sword.

I think it was Bumgarner and Posey who now have 3 WS in 5 years just completely outsmarting a Royals team would was lucky to make it pass the first round. Kind of like they knew they would chase those pitches. A good major league batter wouldn't chase those.shmenguin wrote:I'm no baseball expert but I have to think all those guys chasing high fastballs was a result of good pitching as opposed to world class lousy hitting, Perez included. Its almost impossible to hit a 93 mph fastball above shoulder height. I agree with shaf, once I saw Perez swinging at those, I knew it was over.

3-0 from a pitcher in a single world series has happened a few times. Randy Johnson. Bob Gibson. Lew burdette, mickey lolich. Maybe a couple more back in the day. Bumgarner is nasty. What a performance.
edit - of course, that is all irrelevant now, as the official score keeper just changed it to a five inning save rather than a win.

Gordon would have been dead at home. Like halfway down the baseline, with maybe even enough time to turn back into third. Posey would have caught the relay, did ten push ups and then tagged him. Cut off man had the ball as he was touching third, and he wasn't really moving too well.

They took the win away from Bumgarner and gave it to Affelt.

Matte would have circled the bases twice in the time it took Gordon to get to third.

AJ Burnett turned down a $12.75M option in Philly. That's surprising. Hate that it helps Philly.

Conjecture:
AJ will get 8-11 mil on a 1 year locally.
Liriano gets a 3 year 36 mil deal from the Rockies or somebody equally innocuous or a 4 year deal from a name team.
Tabata will still wonder how he's taking an mlb check. A players Andy dufresne.

So Maddon gets a nice deal from the Cubs and looks to be in a pretty good situation talent wise. If the Cubs end up winning, Epstein will have sainthood in two places and Maddon will go the the Hall.

The rumor of the Cubs being the front runner for Martin makes me a bit uneasy.MWB wrote:So Maddon gets a nice deal from the Cubs and looks to be in a pretty good situation talent wise. If the Cubs end up winning, Epstein will have sainthood in two places and Maddon will go the the Hall.

If they win one, Epstein will go down as a top 5 all-time GM. To pull 2 gigantic-market teams from the depths of hell and win a WS with both would be ridiculous. Getting Maddon is big, now it just depends on how well they can groom their talent.

The thing with Epstein is that he'll have done it two different ways. He had to completely overhaul the Cubs and had basically gone all young. I'm sure he'll add veterans, but it was quite a different situation than he had in Boston.

Re: Non-Pirates Baseball Thread
I hope the cubs do their money splurge this offseason. it would be at least a year early to add the vets to that core. Castro is still an enigma, Bryant hasn't seen any MLB time and it's too early to count on Baez and Soler to handle pressure situations. For the long run, they'll still be strong, but if they clog their payroll with a 5 year deal on Martin and a 30 year old Lester...it would create some payroll/roster issues down the road.

The Mets have signed Michael Cuddyer to a two year deal, forfeiting their first round pick.

That's interesting. Just heard somewhere the other day that a guy like Cuddyer is hurt by the current system because they aren't good enough to lose a first round pick over, but they're worth more than the qualifying offer. Guess the Mets proved them wrong.Rocco wrote:The Mets have signed Michael Cuddyer to a two year deal, forfeiting their first round pick.

I'm not sure the Mets should be too proud of that. Though if they end up going on a huge spending spree it won't be that big of a deal.MWB wrote:That's interesting. I agree, the deal only makes sense if it's the start of many moves to be in contention now.
