Yeah, the only commercials are the ones he reads, and half the time he just makes fun of the copy.

Re: Podcasts You Like
I listen to the hour long one because it comes out right after the show ends and I can listen to it that day.
The fact that he isn't forced to talk about sports all the time is actually good...he'd end up just rehashing the same talking points like every other daily sports show.

The TPS version comes out same day as well. I get out of work by 3 most days, and it is usually out.

Re: Podcasts You Like
I picked this up and it's *just* good enough. The content is pretty great, at least now when I can pick and choose from the archive. The hosts aren't professional radio people and are just slightly better than competent, but they make up for it in enthusiasm. Also, it has a slightly female agenda but it's not that influential. It'd be more balanced if one of the presenters was a man. In listening to this, it spun me off into:IanMoran wrote:Stuff you missed in history class- mostly just an interesting tidbit show
Sawbones: A Marital Tour of Misguided Medicine
It's a Dr. and her husband talking about medical procedures from the past and present that are not so good. The wife plays the straight man and the husband tries to be funny (needs to dial it back) and kind of riffs on it. It's been pretty interesting, going to start this one from the beginning and listen all the way through since it's relatively new.
Love the TK show, just wish it was published on the day it aired.

Re: Podcasts You Like
This Podcast Stinks is same day. I think you mentioned lack of production quality. I'm no audiophile by any stretch, but it seems like the same show and quality as the one that comes out a day later and is split in two sections.dodint wrote:

I'll check it out again now that I'm more familiar with the show. Thanks.

Re: Podcasts You Like
Stuff You Should Know is half decent. Not as polished as Stuff You Missed in History Class but it's good filler when washing dishes or brushing teeth.
Found the NPR Car Talk Best Of feed, so that's cool. The tribute episode was sad and hilarious all at once.
This American Life is alright. The Jeep Chrysler dealer episode was pretty interesting.
I'm going to start Serial next week after I'm completely clear of school. Rave reviews everywhere for that.

I've only been listening to YMIW sparingly as of the past few months or so, whereas before I'd listen to every episode.Idoit40fans wrote:The last time he had good guests was before he started putting together his show. I listened to it like 2 jobs ago so thats 2012 probably
However, the recent Harris Wittels one is definitely worth checking out (a return to form, I guess you could call it?). I'm also re-listening to the Chris Gethard one right now, which is one of the best ones and comes highly recommended.

Re: Podcasts You Like
I began listening to another podcast to add to my original list:
StartUp. Alex Blumberg documents his leaving Planet Money and NPR to start his own podcasting network. It's an interesting look at starting a company from the ground up that you don't really get to see often. Recommended.

Cool about StartUp. Passed it onto a friend. We've kicked around the idea of doing our own podcast but it hasn't gone anywhere. Might light a fire under his ass.

Seconded. Listened to all these on a long drive home today. Very interesting and well done.nocera wrote:I began listening to another podcast to add to my original list:

Just started this one. It is very good and very hard to stop listening to.nocera wrote:
And I wanted to separate this one: Serial. Produced by This American Life it's a serialized in-depth look at a teen murder case from the late 90s. It's seriously incredible. Download it now.

I'm glad I saved Serial, going to listen to it in the truck when I move the rest of my stuff from NC.

Serial is on my list. I've just preferred comedy podcasts lately. Doing a road trip for Xmas. Maybe I'll bust it out then.

Re: Podcasts You Like
Have started checking out podcasts for the first time while commuting by myself with my wife off on maternity leave.
The Partially Examined Life is a great philosophy podcast. The format is 3-5 guys who were classmates together in Phil grad program before all dropping out discussing s particular text over 90-120 minutes. While I don't care for the one guy too much, I find them to be very enjoyable overall. Fair warning: The subject matter is quite dense at times, though.

Science Friday is a good one (didn't look to see if it was mentioned yet). My favorite I've listen to so far was the science of thanksgiving dinner.

If you like Serial, I'm sure you've seen the SNL spoof already.

If you haven't listened to the complete season yet, there are NO spoilers in their spoof so enjoy.
