The #Pirates have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with RHP A.J. Burnett (@wudeydo34) for 2015.

He managed to crank out 213 innings and 8 Ks/9 innings last year despite a hernia. Plus he told his agent he only wanted to come back to Pittsburgh. Hopefully he doesn't spend games complaining about defensive shifts and bullying the manager in to leaving him in a game for too long.

I agree, especially right at the start of free agency.

Hopefully he's still a net positive in the clubhouse and the rotation. Didn't both Morton and Locke have good things to say about him and how he improved their game?

So the Pirates decided against bringing Burnett back for 2014 and instead got a similar/better performance from Volquez for $12M less, then got Burnett for about $4M less than his option year he had with Philly had he exercised the option.

Brings stability to the rotation. AJ on a one year deal is a lot more appealing to me than Liriano or Volquez on 3 year deals.

Would still like Liriano back on a two year deal though. But doesn't make sense for him, unless he be willing to sign for 2 years ~$20M after turning down 1 year $15M.

From DK's website:
Burnett: “It’s about winning to me. It’s about how many I’ve got left. It’s about my family and my heart. To be able to get out where I want, I’m so lucky to have that opportunity. There’s nowhere I’d rather finish my career that in that city, with that organization and those people in that locker room. I’m sure I’ve got one more left in me, and there’s no place I’d rather be.”

On hernia: “I had surgery in October, and the very next week I was ramping up my training. I expect to be full-go for spring training.”

Says he approached Pirates, not other way around: “This wasn’t about money. And if anybody asks, this was going to be my last season. I want to be in a place where I was really, really happy. This is just where I belong. There are some gut feelings you have to go with. I made it very clear, this wasn’t about the money. Let’s just get it done.”

Volquez was really good.

If this is the replacement for Liriano, then the gap between Cole and everyone else just got a lot bigger. Need to re-sign Liriano or find another pitcher. More needs done.

If it's the only thing they do to build a rotation then I'm not a fan. If it's just the first move in 2-3 signings for the rotation (assuming a Liriano or someone comparable) then I think it's pretty good at that price.
