I understand what you're saying, but that "talent gap" is much smaller than you believe, and frankly, its close enough that things going your way with some luck and the like could get you an appearance or a championship. They don't have time to hope Taillon comes back from TJ and that Glasnow becomes a 2 or 3. Now is the time.Troy Loney wrote:Yeah, I should have worded that differently. This is a competitive window now, but currently there's too much of a talent gap with them against the playoff teams. The championship window is contingent on those three starters staying healthy and anchoring the rotation before 2019.slappybrown wrote:We don't even know what Taillon and Glasnow are. I think the window is now. That doesn't mean give Martin 5/82, but the team is good enough that they've made two straight postseason appearances. This is the window.Troy Loney wrote:The competitive window is not McCutchen related. The window is Cole, Taillon & Glasnow.

So Russ wanted a more long term deal then. If that is what the pirates offered that is certainly reasonable.ulf wrote:Pompeani claims the pirates offered 3/48

A solid enough offer that would never be accepted with the 4 year offers flying around. That seems to be the Pirates' way of handling things. Not Huntington can look back and say, "We gave him what we thought was a fair offer. We have to work within the construct of our team blah blah build within blah blah".ulf wrote:Pompeani claims the pirates offered 3/48

I'm just frustrated. Martin was just a perfect fit for this team and it sucks seeing him go. The offer they gave him, while fair, was never going to be enough to sign him. It just seems like a token action at this point so they can say, "well, at least we tried!".

So you would have been happy if they offered him 5 years 82 million?

And how would Huntington be wrong by saying that? It's a fair offer. Someone offered more and more time. It's how things work in MLB.Crankshaft wrote:A solid enough offer that would never be accepted with the 4 year offers flying around. That seems to be the Pirates' way of handling things. Any guesses on what sort of offensive stats he'll be putting up in year five of that contract? Sad to see him go but very glad the Pirates didn't offer this contract.

It's just the usual complaining of they won't spend the money. That view has been justified but not in this case.stopper40 wrote:What else were they supposed to do then?Crankshaft wrote:I'm just frustrated. If he is still playing, .220 with 6 home runs in about 300 ABs. Probably at DHFactorial wrote:Any guesses on what sort of offensive stats he'll be putting up in year five of that contract? Sad to see him go but very glad the Pirates didn't offer this contract.

It might be fair in terms of what his value is but if another team you're bidding against is willing to give $32 million more, you're not even close. I didn't want him signed for that kind of money but I don't think the Pirates should get credit for an offer he never would've accepted.

So if they would have offered say 15 million more over the course of the contract, but he turned around and still excepted the Blue Jays contract that would have made a difference? That makes no sense.the riddler wrote:It might be fair in terms of what his value is but if another team you're bidding against is willing to give $32 million more, you're not even close. Re: 2014-2015 Pirates Offseason Thread
Leaving aside the historical issues with spending money, if this is their best, max offer for Martin, what's the problem? That's the outer edges of what I would have offered, and nearly everyone agrees more than that would have been stupid for them. I get that its difficult to give the benefit of the doubt, but the offer was a good one IMO.

Sad to see him go but the Pirates offering anywhere close to that wouldn't have been a very good idea.
Use the money on some pitching and the offseason can still be a good one.
