Imagine the season with an *average* offense.

It looks like they swapped defenses with Pitt.

That "prevent" defense at the end didn't help matters.

Re: Official 2014 Penn State Football Thread
I didn't get to see any of this game today and I'm glad I didn't. I probably would have broken something. It's unbelievable to me that a team can start 4-0 with a lot of question marks and then REGRESS to a 6-5 record. You'd expect even gradual improvement throughout the season but here we are in game #11 and the offense continues to look like that monkey f'ing the football. And judging by the Gamecast, it looked like a classic Paterno-era game -- get a lead and hope to God the defense can hang on. Just needed one more freakin first down and it was over but they can't find the play or the execution to get it done. So disappointing.

Re: Official 2014 Penn State Football Thread
The defense has really gelled through the year and really have become a force to be reckoned with. They give this team a chance pretty much every single game. But I agree, the regression of the offense really has me scratching my head.

Nice of ABC to open the game with a commentator complaining about the sanctions.

Whats happened to hackenburg? I ask that honestly. Seems like he has regressed quite a bit.

BoB was/is a QB guru. Works well in developing young QBs... seems as though Franklin is not.skullman80 wrote:Whats happened to hackenburg? I ask that honestly. Seems like he has regressed quite a bit.

Re: Official 2014 Penn State Football Thread
I am not really enamored with Franklin. I understand his recruiting class hasn't even come to the fore yet, so I am setting that aside, but his decision making is just weird. Like kicking a 51 yard field goal with Sam Ficken in the first quarter, with a backup receiving the snap? Why not do a little pooch punt and pin MSU deep, allowing your defense to flip the field?count2infinity wrote:BoB was/is a QB guru. PSU is 10th out of 10 Bowl Eligible conference teams. Reviewing the tie ins, I'm not convinced they are a shoo in to go to a bowl.
Although if there's a choice in the matter- are you going to take Illinois over PSU? Rutgers?

Once you get away from the top-tier bowls, the lesser bowls will look for the best matchup to maximize their wallet. Every bowl knows that Penn State will sell their full allotment of tickets and then some. If they can pair them up with another team of 'local' interest, then the bowl owners see $$$$$$$. Hence why the Pinstripe Bowl will fall all over themselves to get PSU in Yankee Stadium and if they're lucky, place Notre Dame against them. Don't think that bowl game will be sold out if that's the matchup?

The ACC has much better bowl destinations than Birmingham.
