Re: Rylan's Thread of Personal Committed Relationships
Also, I've found the ones who don't like pop music to be annoyingly complicated. Pretty much every time.

Hipster MIMH... doesn't like girls who like popular things. Let me guess, if they like pumpkin spice lattes, wear north face jackets or ugg boots, they're out as well.

So its either I can't think for myself or are overly complicated? I guess I will take overly complicated and enjoy a wider music selection

Wow, bro. Deep.MalkinIsMyHomeboy wrote:Its not so much that me and a girl like the same music. I just don't think I'm compatible with a girl that listens primarily to pop music because that to me tells me (probably irrationally) that she doesn't really think for herself.

Reverse order for me.shmenguin wrote:Liking the same tv shows is kind of important. Liking the same movies is slightly less important. Liking the same music doesn't matter at all.
Most people I've met can really enjoy at least 2 genres. So, I always preferred (notice I'm not saying required) at least one common genre between any prospective Dishmate and me. Allowed for differences and individuality and then a nice block of stuff in common.

Agreed about preferred vs required. I have some biases obviously, but those are just guidelines. Not rules.Lt. True confession: Once I turned down a date from a guy at the Attic in Oakland because he said the Pixies sucked (I was wearing a Pixies t-shirt at the time). I'm sure that wasn't the only reason, but it was the last reason.shmenguin wrote:Agreed about preferred vs required. I have some biases obviously, but those are just guidelines. Not rules.Lt. He should waited awhile before telling you that. No one wants to be told their taste in music sucks.Lt. Re: Rylan's Thread of Personal Committed Relationships
Yeah if my wife and I had drastically different tastes in music it probably would not have worked out because music was a very big part of my (and by default her) life until about 2009.count2infinity wrote:certainly having things in common are important for some things. music is person by person. My wife and I do not have very similar music tastes; however music is not a big part of either of our lives, so it really doesn't matter. If music is a big part of your life, I could see where you'd want them to share that interest.

Re: Rylan's Thread of Personal Committed Relationships
Better to reveal themselves as an arsehole right off the bat, I'd say. It's one thing to not share interests... it's another to approach someone wearing a shirt and tell them that band/team/etc sucks. Not sure how that is supposed to parlay into a pickup...Factorial wrote:He should waited awhile before telling you that. No one wants to be told their taste in music sucks.Lt. Music is definitely a person by person thing. I wouldn't lose interest in a woman because she didn't like the same music as me, but at the same time, if she was aggressively negative towards it, that would be a huge turn off.

Nothing like opening up to a longtime friend over the Christmas holiday and having it backfire.
