Headley signs a 4 year deal with the Yankees for $52M. Have to think that this is what Walker is looking at when he reaches FA.
Also, Dodgers gave McCarthy a 4 year deal. Just made the Liriano deal look that much better. He basically has the same baggage as Liriano and a smaller sample size of recent success.

The Kemp deal is now up in the air after it was revealed he has arthritis in both hips. That would mess up the Rollins trade, and possibly the Myers trade.

Looks like Upton is going to an "AL West team for young pitching". I would think the Mariners, the Rangers or Angels don't have the pieces for that trade. Oakland does with Gray and Parker...but that wouldn't seem to make sense to me.
Also a report that Tulowitzki to the Mets has some traction.
This has been an incredibly active offseason.

Geeze. Didn't realize how active the Padres have been. What was up with that Myers trade? I can't figure out who the real piece in the deal was for Tampa?

Has to be Souza. The best pieces from the padres were probably Ross and Trea Turner and those two guys went to Washington for Souza

Yuck.
And somehow the Padres held onto Renfroe through all of these deals.

Re: Non-Pirates Baseball Thread
And they just flipped Hanigan for Middlebrooks.
So they've added Kemp, Myers, Upton, Norris and Middlebrooks to a lineup that basically had nobody. It's essentially those five, Yonder Alosno, Gyorko and that guy that got from the Yankees for Headley. Overhauled the lineup and kept three of their best prospects, but it's easy to overhaul a lineup that was more or less a AAA one.

I'm kind of glad to see Middlebrooks go. Through no fault of his own Youk got pushed out because of him and he's been very blergh as a Sock
Funny seeing the Padres load up. They are the most irrelevant franchise in maybe all of sports

The Yankees are pretty desperate to shuffle Arod out of the lineup, so they acquired Garrett Jones.

Re: Non-Pirates Baseball Thread
Going into pitchers and catchers reporting last year, the braves looked primed to contend for the division and were locking up their youngest and best players. Now they appear set for a rebuild. I wonder if they are just writing off the rest of upton's contract and setting up to compete the year after it expires and he never plays again.

Rebuild? But they just acquired Jason Grilli.

I'm not just amazed that he got a two year deal, but he somehow managed to get an option for a third. It's a team option, but an option nonetheless.

Great news for his publisher; those books will fly off the shelves in the Atlanta metro area.

Re: Non-Pirates Baseball Thread
it's hard to see the braves as doing a full rebuild here. Seems like with the new GM they wanted to reorganize their assets or recenter their core. I think a true rebuild would have seen them move Kimbrel, a valuable closer has little value to a team in rebuild mode. Seems like they decided that Upton and Heyward weren't the lineup pieces they wanted to anchor with. The rotation looks really strong and they just need a few pieces to emerge for the lineup since they have Freeman.

Re: Non-Pirates Baseball Thread
Yeah their putching staff could very possibly be among the best again. The nats have the pitching and the offense though.
Teheran
Minor
Miller
Wood.
None of those guys are out of position in those rotation slots.
Im ok with the heyward trade. I would have rather he stayed and hes still young, but if he is just the player they have had, then they won that trade.
Upton trade seems to have been badly handled.

Re: Non-Pirates Baseball Thread
The Upton trade seems like a concession that they had no interest in signing him and wanted to flip him now. That is a bad return. The only piece that seems significant is a pitching prospect that has already had major surgery.

Yeah, the timing is great less than a month after leaving beachy and medlen. I guess they are trying to get back to their total tommy john quota.

Re: Non-Pirates Baseball Thread
Baseball HOF list announced tomorrow. Didn't realize this:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/spor ... ming-vote/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
There are a lot of worthy candidates this year that won't be voted because of the limit.Buster Olney, a former Baltimore Sun and New York Times beat writer who is an important voice for baseball information and commentary at ESPN, wrote in early December that he would not vote this year. His rationale: Because he is limited to 10 choices, he would have to leave off players he considered worthy – Mussina, Raines and Schilling, perhaps. By not voting, Olney will automatically increase the percentage of ballots on which those players appear, if only slightly.
