Do you have anything to substantiate this? Recall notices are issued by the manufacturer, not the dealerships, and the costs are typically covered by the manufacturer. Are you saying that manufacturers issue recalls so dealerships can scam people? I'm confused.PensFanInDC wrote:A lot of recall notices are just ways for dealerships to try and squeeze money out of people.

Customers don't even pay for recall repairs I thought.

No, they don't pay for recall repairs - even when a car is 3+ years out of warranty.slappybrown wrote:Customers don't even pay for recall repairs I thought.
Dealerships have these "complimentary car checks" where they check tailights, brakes, tread wear, and other things that generate revenue. That's how they found my motor mount issue. I expected them to find something, and they didn't let me down.

I never said dealers issue them. I said they are used by dealerships to try and squeeze money out of people. I have never left a recall fix without an estimate under $1,000 for "repairs that are needed".shafnutz05 wrote:Do you have anything to substantiate this? Also... sometimes when it is cold my oil pressure light flickers at startup. Takes an extra second or two to build pressure. This is of course in a 12 valve cummins, so it's probably an exception.
I change my synthetic oil in my TDI at 10k mile intervals.

I've had two recalls in the last year on my Toyota and there wasn't any monkey business. They even hand washed my car the last time.

Re: Car thread
Can I say station wagons? Not a crossover, not a jacked up SUV wanna-be like the Subaru Outback, the "Allroad" Audis, or the "Cross Country" Volvos, but a regular station wagon. Other than some really expensive BMW and Mercedes models, the only other company I can think of that still makes a regular station wagon is WV with the Jetta wagon. I remember when wagon versions were commonplace, and you could get wagon versions of cars like the Civic, Corolla, Escort, Cavalier, Focus, Accord, Camry, Taurus, etc.slappybrown wrote:

Re: Car thread
Audi dropped the A4 Avant for the U.S. They only sell it in SUVed-up Allroad form, just like Subaru dropped the regular Legacy wagon.

What year Sportage? A mid 2000 Kia isn't as solid as one made in the last few years. The brand has come on strong.FreeCandy44 wrote:Hi Car thread....first time/long time.

If you go Sportage, get as close to 2012 as possible. The 3rd gen came out in 2011.

I had a 2010 Sportage before I bought my Wrangler. I had no issues with it. I put on about 45K miles in 2 years and the only work I had done was a control arm replaced (under warranty at the time). It did very well in the winter months. Gas mileage was only okay, about 19-21 mpg.

Re: Car thread
The gas mileage is very attractive, as is the design of said vehicles. I have friends with both, one has a 08 Hyundai and one has a 09 Kia and they rave about them. They really dig them in the winter as well.

Keep in mind, unless you buy new or certified pre owned, you're not going to get the 10y/100k mile warranty

Re: Car thread
I have a two part-question:
One of my cars is a 2002 Mercedes C230 Kompressor Sport Coupe. It's basically a glorified hatchback, and I just found out that one of the plastic hooks that holds the wire attaching the "cargo cover" to the rear door broke. The dealer's service claims the actual hook cannot be bought, so I am supposed to replace the whole "cargo cover", and the price they quoted was quite steep. I think that this is one of the repairs I can easily do by myself, so:
A: Does anybody know the actual name of the "cargo cover"? Basically, it's the cover that gets raised by the two wires anytime you open the rear door, and goes down when you lower the rear door. I googled I think pretty much all combinations of (trunk, cargo, rear door) + (cover, lid), but I am unable to see that part sold anywhere online.
B: What are "the ultimate" sources for car parts online (hopefully with diagrams and/or pictures)?
Thanks in advance for any tips!
