At some point this thread became... "Who can post the most obscure person to die?"

Re: RIP Thread
I mentioned that a few months ago. Once I get around to it I'm going to start scanning random midwest newspapers and selecting an obituary based on the coolest sounding name.

If you're too square to know who Kim Fowley was, then that's your issue.

Re: RIP Thread
Knowing who he was and caring about any of the music in which he was involved are two entirely different things. I guess I'm just not cool enough to call other people's musical interests, or lack thereof, square...columbia wrote:If you're too square to know who Kim Fowley was, then that's your issue.
On further review, I looked up the music to which he was connected, and I do indeed think it largely sucks, and I'm 45 and grew up in that era. If that makes me square, I'm good with that.

Re: RIP Thread
The point; of course, is that there are many people who have been have important others. Why complain about it, in the cases that aren't known to you?

Re: RIP Thread
Perhaps some are skeptical that the mourning by a particular person is actually more important than the desire to be "FIRST!" to the RIP thread. This isn't about you, just commentary on the tone of the thread.

Re: RIP Thread
To that point... just about everyone that has ever lived is important to someone else. This thread would get really unmanageable if it were to chronicle everyone who ever died. I get your point, but there is a line somewhere, no? This wasn't a case of not known, it was a case of, "Important to those outside of family and friends?" I freely admit I could be wrong, but I didn't think the average person was slapping a Kim Fowley LP on the turntable in remembrance...
Maybe it's just been a long night and I'm being insensitive.

Re: RIP Thread
but I didn't think this was a thread about celebrity death. Even mac posted in here quite recently that a co-worker passed away at a very young age.
I think there's a line somewhere, where maybe it was somebody you knew, a singer/actor that you might have heard growing up, etc. If you're posting about Mary Smith from Bearcreek, Montana who died from natural causes*, I'm guessing there's a reason other than wanting to bump your post count +1.
* - I don't know if there really was a Mary Smith in Bearcreek, Montana (population: 72). She was only a hypothetical example.

Re: RIP Thread
If the deaths mentioned meant something to the one that posted, then I do apologize. I wasn't always sure that was the case.

With singers, actors, etc., I've posted a few with the intention that maybe somebody else might have heard of them or that it was a name that might have been off the radar for awhile.

Re: RIP Thread
The reason there's an RIP thread is that we used to get a different thread for every single person who died, which prompted the inevitable arguing over whether or not that person deserved their own thread.
I'd say this thread is doing it's job.

Re: RIP Thread
Yeah, you've said this before but he died on the 15th so there was hardly any sense of "I have to scan the obits and be and be first to post this". I do find it amusing that someone who regularly posts about some of most mundane events of their life would complain about such a thing. I have a feeling a few more people would be more interested in Kim Fowley dying that you ordering a Pizza.dodint wrote:Perhaps some are skeptical that the mourning by a particular person is actually more important than the desire to be "FIRST!" to the RIP thread. Sigwolf, maybe Kim Fowley was unknown to most but I've known about him for 25+ years as I have a record with the above song on it and thought a least a few other posters would find this interesting. Also, looking at his bio, he was responsible for forming The Runaways (Joan Jett's band) and co wrote a lot of songs with the likes of Kiss. Hardly a random person from Montana. I've always seen this thread as a place to learn about the deaths of notable people who I knew of and people that I didn't that I should know of.

Re: RIP Thread
As I said, I wasn't speaking about anyone in particular, just an observation of the thread over the last year. I'm not going to devolve the discussion into something personal just to argue with you, we have the desultory discussions thread for that.
